What I learned about overhauls on Facebook

so I recently learned this term called "top end overhaul" . He's having running issues. anyway be curious I had to ask what that was . now I'm thinking decarbon the head and piston, valve job and a head gasket. no I was wrong. apparently you leave the bottom end assembled , hone the block, hose it out with brake clean and rering it to. I ask how the heck can you get that hone dust out of the governor weights , crank bearings ect. I get a I did a good job. few days later same guy has another tractor that has running issues. runs a bunch of sea foam through it and still don't understand why it don't run. I comment why don't you take it apart and do it rights. I get the I cleaned the carb 6 or 8 times. after questioning I find out he never took the whole carb apart.
so the moral to the story , if you are going to work on your engine take the time to do it right. in the long run the results will be much better.

Hacks are everywhere and usually the first one to start handing out advice. I know a guy that sandblasted the engine for a Harley, he took the jugs off but left the crank and connecting rods in the bottom end, he stuffed newspaper in the hole around the connecting rods to "keep the sand out", needless to say the engine was a boat anchor a short time later.

Got the carb cleaned 6 or 8 times. I wonder why he stopped at 8. The ninth time might have been the charm. :bigthink:

I just stay off those sites on FB. They make smoke come out my ears with "information overload", LOL. Or at least that's what I will call it....

I agree with ya Roland! Yeah those fb sites, there's some real winners on there! And like Don said, you can't tell them nothing!
