Changing valve guide

I tore down a k301 and it seems to have play on the old valve stem. do I need a special tool to remove and replace them. I do know the new ones will need reamed to size. thank you

I have changed them before. I just took a Hammer and a Punch and drove them out. You could also do it with a Press.

It's an ai cooled engine. The valve guide aren't real tight. You can replace them, as they can wear, but I think you'll find the new ones "loose" also. I've not ever needed to reem new ones. Best way to know if they are shot, is to measure them. If you don't have a valve bore guide, you probably shouldn't be making decisions about whether they are wore out. Have the machine shop that bored/bores the block check them.

thank you for the info. I didn't measure them but there not the same size . the exhaust is somewhat larger than intake. most machine shops in my area have nothing to do with small engines. out of the 5 or six I called with in a two hour drive only one agreed to look at the block to see if he could bore it. one shop said they would recommend buying a new engine instead of rebuilding a small engine.one shop said the quit crank grinding because new cranks for 350s could be bought so cheap.

Are you comparing new valves, or old ones? Exhaust guides will be more loose. Exhaust gets hotter, expands more.

yes the exhaust valve was more loose. i haven't ordered my valves yet but ill compare it when i get them . the exhaust valve was egg shaped bad.

I'm not saying your guides aren't bad. They may be. I just know I've replaced them before because I thought they were shot, but the new ones weren't any tighter. If your doing a complete rebuild then I guess it's really no consequence to replace them.
