"M18S" = 18 hp, but on my 1541 it's 15hp?
 

Just wondering how they rate horsepower on the 1541. A 1872 has the same engine and it's listed as 18 hp or am I wrong.. I looked up the Magnum M18S on a Cub Cadet site and it's listed at 18 hp anyway.

To my mind this would mean they under rated it for the 1541... or they over rate it for the other tractors it came in.. So (this is me thinking) if my Cub is under rated horse power wise that would be a good thing for me?

So basically, your thinking that it sould be labeled as a 1841, That would make sence to me, Or maybe it got replaced. Or something like that.

There is no 1841. The 1541s used under-rated M18s. I'm not sure if you have to change anything to make it 18 hp, or if it's just an M18 relabeled as having 15 hp.

I have been told,so don't take my word on it. That by adjusting the rpm governor and adjusting ( maybe re-jetting ) the carb, will up the power on the m15 to what it is supposed to have.

So the way I took it was they ( Kohler ) just detuned and lowered the rpms on the m18 to make the m15.

Don't know if it is correct or not though.

I thought I read that it had something to do with the carb. You should look and see if the parts manual calls for two different carbs.

I'm pretty sure the heads are differnet. Other than that, I don't really know of any difference.

Ok, I just checked the parts lookup. Heads are the same (52-015-08), carbs are not (M15: 52-853-23, M18: 52-853-04).

Thanks guys. The model number I took off my engine is "M18S"
I looked through the parts site and missed the fact about the carbs so kudos to aagitch, Joe and Matt.:beerchug:

My interest isn't to change it (unless the carb craps out and needs to be replaced :Whistle: ) it was to wonder if a engine designed for 18 hp will last longer as a 15 hp?
