Kohler K161 - CC 72 won't start
Hi!
My 7 hp cub 72 won't turn over. Got carb cleaned, rebuilt, I'm getting spark, gas is full and on, .... just cranks but never turns over. Was able to get it going with starter fluid once then cut out and now just cranks. Doesn't matter if I add starter fluid now or adjust carb, it just cranks and cranks, never turning over . Any advice would be appreciated bc I'm stumped and getting frustrated. It's about to find its way to Craigslist haha. |
If the engine cranks with the starter, it IS TURNING OVER. It just isn't STARTING.
If it is getting spark, and won't run, you either are not getting fuel, or there is an internal problem in the engine. If you shot it with ether and it tried to run, then you likely aren't getting fuel. Take the carb off and disassemble it again. Blow air through all the passages and make sure they are clean. Remove the fuel tank and clean it out. Clean the sediment bowl on the tank and replace the gas line to the carb. Try it again. |

Perhaps you can explain it better. |
Sorry for the verbiage mistake. By crank I meant I'll turn key and it turns over but never starts up. Just turns over until I basically drain the battery.

Start with the basics ---
Air Fuel Spark Air - does the choke open and close? Does the throttle? Look down the bore of the carb while operating each of the cables from the dash. Fuel - clean the system as Jonathan directed. Spark - remove the spark plug and lay it on top of the motor with the spark plug wire connected. Now crank the engine and observe the spark at the plug. It should be bright blue and spark as long as the engine is being turned over. Check this and report back. |
Yep spark plug sparks nice blue color. Choke opens and closes ok as well. I'll try to drain the fuel and clean gas tank and sediment bowl, I haven't done that at all. Any advice on clean the tank and bowl? Any particular way that is best to do that? Thanks again

Flush it with gasoline.
