1050 a good machine

Hey everybody:

I have been kind of thinking about adding a Cub Cadet 1050 to my fleet (there is one for sale locally). I'm just looking for some input/opinions about these particular models. I used to shy away from non IH built Cubs, but my 2072 I got last year convinced me that CCC did build some good machines. Is there any particular things I should look for?

Thank you everybody for your time

The 1050 is a great tractor. The engine is rubber mounted but uses a different mount system then the rest of the Cub's and it's a much better system. My 1050 is the smoothest running Cub i have, there is hardly any vibration from the engine.

I love my 1050. I use it for garden duty. Old tired Mag 10 will still run a #2 tiller!

Thank you Tim and Jon for the replies I was wondering where this tractor has the mag 10 are these engines a better canidate for a rebuild when it becomes neccessary.

The Mag 10 in mine is shot. I have a K301 bored and ready to assemble to put in it. I won't rebuild the Mag 10 and put it back in. Not impressed with the Mag. No way to adjust timing. I can get more power out of a K241. I have lots of motors, so I'm going back with the 301... at least until I build a 321 or 341 for it, lol.

I would rather have a K series than an M series. Unless we are talking twin cylinders. Then, I'd rather have the Mag.

IIRC didn't they have an issue with broken teeth on one of the gears?

All the aluminum rear gear drives had issues with 2nd. I think it was more operator abuse than anything though. Something to check. It uses the same internal parts as a steel rear though, so finding parts isn't a big deal.

Does the K series kohler fit in easily or are there any modifications that need to be done? Also are certain engines easier to adapt to the 1050 for instance and engine out of a quietline or out of an older machine such as a 128/129 would work? This 1050 is said to run very well but im just thinking about later on down the road when it will need attention what the options are if I get this machine it will more than likely be a worker thanks

Well.... there is a long answer to a seemingly simple question.

If you want to just swap engines, yes, the QL motor is the one you want. But you will still have to change some parts if you want to keep it somewhat original. I'm going off memory here, but I think the mufflers and muffler boxes are different, but they will interchange. Either way, a QL exhaust will likely work fine as it just exits out the front. The ignition system is different between the two, so wiring will be involved to power the battery ignition system. Easiest way is to change the ignition switch and do some minor wiring. Rest is the same.

Now, you can use a later K series block if it has the holes for the electric PTO and for the dipstick, although, it isn't a big deal if it has the dipstick in the top right corner, or if it is on the lower front right side. All the parts on the M10 will interchange to the K series block, so as long as the block you find has PTO and dipstick holes, you don't need a complete assembly. A complete motor from a pre QL series will not necessarily work, and you can't use a S/G motor unless you change it to a starter/alternator motor.

Make sense??

Yes I just remembered the starter generator setup on earlier ones and figured it would be more in depth work to change the charging system should work out well if I need an engine in the future as I have several QL engines laying around and several different HPs to choose from thank you again Jon for all the information im pretty sure now if i can setup a time with the owner this will more than likely come home with me.
I will update if/when I make a deal.
