2082 Ignition Module Installation
Hey everyone,
I'm getting ready to put a new ignition module on my 2082. I bought a new Kohler OEM ignition module for my 20hp Magnum and was wondering if I need to worry about air gap setting etc? I've never had to replace one before on my other 2 Kohler Magnums so I'm not familiar with this process. I will be finishing pulling the motor here in the next couple days and want to be more prepared. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance |
The Kohler engine manual explains the procedure.

Here's the manual:

Thanks guys. Haha yeah I know it'll take me an hour tops to get the engine out, it's just that I have a fevered 7 month old at home right now, and between his mother and my work schedule finding the time to work on it has been tough.

Following the service manual to change any part is always the best method to get the desired results for any repair. Sometimes there are a few tricks that get learned along the way. Here's one that makes adjusting the air gap for the ignition module easier. Slide the coil up on its mounts and snug the mounting screws. Turn the flywheel until the magnet is directly under the ignition module. Insert a standard paper business card between the ignition module and the coil, then loosen the mounting screws. The module will be pulled down tightly by the magnet. Tighten the module mounting screws. Now rotate the flywheel to remove the business card. Most air gap settings are around .008" -.010," the same thickness as a standard paper business card. Quick and easy, and you don't have to fight using a steel feeler gauge around a magnet. To be truly accurate you can measure the thickness of the business card with a micrometer, or check the gap with a feeler gauge afterwards.

Awesome, I'll give it a try, thank you!
