Kid killed after falling off mower

This is one of my pet peeves. I know parents love to take the kiddies for a ride. Don't be stupid.:BB&YS:

That's terrible. My kid's love going for rides but i always keep it in first or second with the engine at an idle, no need to be going fast when the kids are riding with me.

Giving a ride just putting around is one thing, but to give a ride while actually mowing is just insanity.

What a horrific thing to have to live with the rest of your life. I just can't imagine.

My daughter goes on rides, but not while mowing. I only run it at about 1/4 throttle and don't run it that fast for obvious reasons. I would also hate to live with that the rest of my life.

My wife and I close the curtains as the next door neighbor and the neighbor across the street have their youngests with them as they mow. :bash2:

I would printout the linked news article and put a copy in their mailbox.

With a note.

I won't even let my kids outside while I mow, I think it was last year a little boy got killed because his dad hit something with the mower and it shot out and hit him in the head. I know accidents happen but I try to do all I can to prevent it.

Damn straight Tim. We can never be too careful. That includes wearing ear and eye protection for ourselves My former neighbor even had to have the top of his ear removed because he had skin cancer from being sunburnt too much on it. Now, I doubt that happened just because he mowed, but it didn't help his situation either to sit on a mower in the summer sun all of those hours without some kind of shield or screen. I bought a straw hat and my nephew laughed at me. I told him that I can take the hat off whenever I want and still have all of my ear, but my former neighbor couldn't. Stay smart and safe everyone!!!

**Thanks for sharing this Sam. It is unfortunate to hear of this incident, but lessons are repeated until we learn from them.

Yep. This is sad. And the very reason my kids never rode while mowing. I also make sure the wife and kids are all in the house while I mow. The wife found out a couple years ago why when I picked up a hidden stick that flung out and left a nasty bruise on her leg!

Yeah hindsight is certainly 20-20 on this one. I must confess to have letting my boy ride along when he was small a few times. Looking back that wasn't a wise thing. I did the same thing when I was small with my dad. The thing is we really knew better because we were on an active grain and tobacco farm and knew the dangers. We were fortunate, and I probably will speak up down the road concerning future generations.

I have a very small Deere combine, you can wedge a normal sized guy (me) and a decent sized kid in the cab, but the kid is propped against the side window. I realized this wasn't too bright of an idea after my boy and cousin rode with me a few times, so I made a filler panel from plywood that would be the "wall" they sat against--it was against the metal part of the cab, not the glass.

It's been interesting trying to teach my son how to use tractors, as we don't really permit them to ride along on fenders and drawbars like when I came along. We don't have any with cabs on them so we have to get creative.
