Help with mower
 

I have not been doing much with cubs lately as I have said due to some health issues. Yesterday was nice out so I though I would try some mowing on my 2072 . When It would get under load the deck would slow and even stop spinning. If I would slow down or stop it would start spinning again. I do not think the belt was slipping as I did not see any smoke or smell any burning. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I can't really get down and dirty trying to fix it right now but might be able to walk my son through it.

Something is definitely "slipping". Possibilties are: (a) worn belt, (b) worn pulley(s), (c) deck belt tensioner not working, and (d) PTO clutch slipping.

All good possibilities mentioned. I'd like to add that I had a blade come loose on a spindle. Probably hit a stump on one blade that stopped the deck and it loosened the other.

Roland what is the best way to narrow it down

Visual observation on A, B, & C. Once the condition starts, one could get off the tractor and take a look at the PTO, if that is possible on your model. None the less, something is slipping.

I looked everything over and found that the one pully on the mule drive was all the way forward almost touching the front of the mule drive. I tightened the other side until they were even. If I am correct this is what puts tension on the drive belt. With it all the way forward I don't think there was much tension on the belt.

I think you found your problem. One of the Mule Drive Pulley's should be "spring loaded" applying constant tension.

I thought I had it too but no such luck. Is the deck drive belt the same on a 2072 and a 1572 or are they different that could be my problem. I took the deck off my 1572 and put it on the 2072. Also this 2072 has an iron rear. How do I check the hydro fluid there is no dip stick. I do see the plug on the back, is that where I check if so how much is good. I already did way more than I am supposed to so now I will have start again tomorrow.

Sure you haven't broke a spring on the mule drive idler/tensioner or on the deck tensioner?

You asked about the oil level and having a cast iron rear. I don't know if you have the same rear as a 982, but those have a hidden dipstick that not a lot of folks know about. I think you access it by removing the small plate above the tunnel cover. It looks just like an engine diptstick IH used in tractor engines back in the 70's. Sorry about the pic quality, you can make out the dipstick just behind where the pump mounts
