1806 transmission/gearbox noises

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum so thanks in advance. I recently bought a used 1806 Cub to rob/swap some parts [it had good tires] for my 1711. Having done that, I would like to fix up the 1806. It runs fine no other issues that I know of except, the transmission is making a rapping/clacking noise.:bigthink: Mostly when it is in reverse [sounds a bit like a small track driven machine]. The transmission is the 3 speed, and it has the hi-low box. No noise when not moving, or when in neutral with the clutch out/up. I am fairly good mechanic rebuilding engines and such is not uncommon. Is there anything obvious/common that is know to cause this? I thought I would ask here before taking it apart. Thanks again for any replies.

There's probably a tooth broken off one of the gears. I have a 100 that makes the same noise in 2nd.

Hello, those aluminum gear drive transaxles were not the best. Known for stripping teeth off 1st & 2nd or R. Swap a cast iron trans in and have a good tractor. You can put the fine spline carrier and axles in the cast one. Mike
