1810 starter issues
I have an 1810 Cub Cadet, (Kohler motor)when starting the engine,it sometimes grinds or it sounds like a sick elephant (not engaging).I was told I need to spray 10W-D40 on the starter gears where it meets the fly wheel. Is there a dust shield That I can remove to do this ? It looks like the starter is right next to the frame rail? I pressure washed the area around it and it looks like I have to remove a heat shield to get a better look: What's everyone's thought on this issue ?.....Thank You in Advance.

I usually take a drill with an 1/8" bit and put a hole right where the starter bendix is, then you can use whatever lube you want as long as it has a straw on the can.

I just lubed one the other day. I used an oil can. Probably had 30wt in it. That's what I lube them with. I just shoot it on the back side of the gear. It's best if you can do it with the bendix extended. You can push it out a bit with a screwdriver. As a note, it basically threads out on a very coarse thread. Like 1 rotation and it's out. I did it without removing the side tin, but it's tricky.
