Linkage issue?

Hi all,

I’ve ran into a few things that me scratching my head with my 1450. I’ve tried browsing through the manuals but I’m thinking I am trying to track down an answer while weeding through someone’s handy work. Having a lack of experience with these machines I’m hooping that a few sets of seasoned eyes will be able to tell me where to start with my issue.

When I first bought the machine the choke had to be pulled in order to have in the off/open position (linkage installed wrong) I went to fix linkage, noticed a lack of air filter/housing and the tab on the carb appeared to be backwards. Must be an aftermarket carb so I cut and made a makeshift choke tab for the carb. I bought a used air filter housing for a quietline and installed. Now that this is installed and my choke is working properly the filter housing pinches the linkage, so my choke and throttle cables are rendered useless… something isn’t right.

A few questions:
  1. Does something look out of place with my linkage?
  2. Is there a proper source for aftermarket carbs? I found the Cub part number is KH-47-853-20 but when looking online pics vary with the aftermarket units, not having an OEM one makes it hard for me to know which to get or if a new one is needed.
  3. I didn’t see in the manual but a spacer between the carb and the filter housing would solve my issue but I think would present an issue with the side panels fitting on.
  4. Somewhat related question do all these tractors have two dipsticks? Or is that just some more cobbling done by previous owner?
And….. more importantly than all my rambling. here are some pics.

Did the new air cleaner come with the spacer?

Is it that simple? Uggg perhaps that is what the cleaned circle is from on the back of the air cleaner. I used a sheet of gasket material I cut out but overlooked the spacer aspect.

Not needed!

OP...this is cobble job 101! There is extra NON OEM linkage added and old er style parts retrofitted that are not necessary. The "link" going from the throttle cable mount to the governor arm is homemade. It should have one long link/spring to connect. I am not sure about the choke tab on carb....looks to have been repaired. The proper air cleaner back plate recesses over the carb some but should clear with NO problems.Go to cubcadet.com and look up 1450 engine and you will see what is missing and what you should be using.

That is the correct style air cleaner back plate. You also have a cam cover dipstick that was NOT used on a 1450 Quietline, Again cobble job 101!

Thanks all. I did a bit more digging, and have noted the cobbling (thanks for pointing this out Beth)

Thoughts on carb? I’m fairly convinced it is wrong and a bit short. When I am putting the housing on I am hitting on the throttle tab/flapper and the linkage. See pics. If the carb was a half inch deeper or had a spacer these would be a non issue. Do I have a stubby carb?? (I know I will have to fix the non oem issues but I don’t think it’s leading to my fitment issue)

Bullwinkle- the pic is great thanks, it’s easy for me to get lost in the parts diagram. What’s the deal with the fuel routing in that pic am I missing some sort of pump as well? Or is that a separate application?

HyperLightboards48...I was going to post that pic too but didn't because of the fuel routing. The pic has the correct style spring you need. However the fuel routing system shown is for another brand (John Deere) and you do not need to worry about that!

That's just a picture I found to show the proper governor spring. Yes, that is a fuel pump. My 1250 (12 HP Kohler) doesn't have one. Sorry if I added any confusion.
