A diesel can only hold so much boost
|
Like anything, diesel engine blocks have a physical stress limit. This one went beyond the limit. Bet it's not covered by warranty!

Yeah.... they can only hold so much boost... but they are dumping a lot of fuel in there too, lol. Like Stan said, everything has a limit. Pretty impressive how far the limit really is before a failure like that though. The old K series Kohlers are the same way. You can take an old K341 (any of them for that matter) a looooooong way from stock.

I Buy parts from these guys.
that was an all motor run, at 120mph, the pump rack stuck wide open, the air shutoff safety malfunctioned, and he kicked it into neutral to not run off the 1/8th mile track. it hit 8k, and threw a rod which hurt the block, and the remaining ones still running under high boost just split the block along the cam line. shrapnel went thru a front tire and damaged the rim also, but he managed to get it stopped without rolling or hitting the wall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co_aHanY1Ek theres some more videos but can't find them at the moment. |
Mighty impressive save :beerchug:

Saw somebody I knew at a tractor pull. I didn't know he pulled. The next week he came into work and I had to talk about the tractor. He has a Allis Chalmers D21 diesel. Man it was so neat hearing that thing spool up. When they drive it up to the line they keep spraying ether in the turbos to keep it running. He told me at roughly 2,000 rpm it starts making enough boost to keep running on its own fuel. Okay it has 4 turbos and to me that didn't make sense on a 6 cylinder. He explained first 2 paralleled turbo put out 75 pounds of boost into 3rd turbo and jumps the boost to 150 pounds and 4th turbo puts out 300 pounds of boost. That tractor started life at 100HP and now is roughly 3,000HP. I asked how expensive is all that HP. He rattled off all kinds of numbers for the various goodies. The one that got my attention. The head $200,000.00. He said that is what makes it all work.
