Update to generator conversion

Early in the week I decided to take apart my old homelite 5500 watt generator and build one that will be driven by one of my Cubs.

I got the old one apart. Made a tapered shaft for the new attachment and started on the mounting assembly. So far all I had to purchase was a flanged bearing " 11$ at grainger "

A little cutting and welding done. All I need now is the pulley and to make the brackets to attach to the front of the cub.

The tapered shaft started out as 1" cold rolled. I tapered one end to 5 degrees 5/8 to 1"
Then threaded the end for the shaft bolt. The other end is cut to 3/4 for the bearing and also serves as a stop for the shaft against the bearing. I still need to cut the key way in end of shaft for the pulley.

So here is the progress.

After it is all mocked up I will take back apart, trim the plate thats too large, add a couple gauges and paint.

I might have missed it in the earlier thread. Where are you mounting it, directly off the front? Looks like a fun project.

Yup. will mount just like the gen set attachment you would buy. I must admit I got the idea because I saw an attachment here like it.

here is an one that was purchased as an attachment.
Mine will be similar. I will have a little better ground clearance because the diameter of my generator is smaller. Mine will also tuck in more under the front of the tractor which is why the shaft on mine is shorter.

Ground clearance will be nice. Then again I suppose you could just have it off till you get it in place where you need power. Curious why is it so low? Is there a large sheave to achieve rpm? What size do you need to run for yours?

Nevermind just went and looked a bit at mine. There isn’t much room there below the clutch. I guess this is why IH made the shredder the way they did... good luck with the rest of the project!

My guess is the original one just worked out the way it did due to convenience. It worked well as is... I think they built it 1-1 ratio. SO that means they ran in full throttle to run the gen set at 3600. I want to run my engine at about 2500 RPM or so. I will have to run an overdrive pulley to achieve that. Preliminary math is looking like a 3.5" pulley will work.
