682 electrical diagnosis help needed
I had just taken a test drive after repairing my trunnion ( many thanks to all who've posted repair tips, which were crucial to my success! ) shut it off and tried to re-start and it would not turn over at all, nothing. After checking voltage (12.48v) and connections with no luck I jumped the terminals on the solenoid and she cranked and fired right up. I'm guessing the solenoid may be bad or maybe the key switch? Maybe something else? I'm not sure. What would you say the proper way to pinpoint the culprit is? I have a multimeter and a brain, when it comes to starter circuits one works better than the other which explains why I need help :). Thanks in advance

Check the safety switches.
One on the brake pedal shaft, and then the pto also acts as one (must be off). Also, depending on the model of 682, it’s possible that the seat safety could come into play as well. Edit: never mind about the seat safety. That wouldn’t affect it turning over. Only things in that circuit are the ignition switch, pto switch and brake switch. If those are all good then it’s possible (probable) it’s the solenoid. First thing I’d look for is 12vdc at the small solenoid terminal when you have to switch in start position. |
Check the plug on the ignition switch for a loose connection.

If I have 12 at the small terminal on the solenoid would that rule out the key switch?

It's most likely the ignition switch terminals are corroded. Try and start the engine while you wiggle the wires on the switch as you are turning the key.
If engine turns over you now found your problem. I have had this problem many times with my 782s. You may have to replace the switch or you might get lucky with cleaning the terminals and wire connectors. Brian |
Thanks for the guidance everyone. Turns out it was the switch and connection that goes to the solenoid. That spade and connector were the only rusted up connections at the switch. It makes me wonder why only that terminal would rust up.

Poor connections generate heat. Heat burns off the protective coating on the terminal that inhibits rust.
