1641 Again

Hey All!

I've been mowing with the 1641 all summer/fall since getting it running well earlier in the summer. It had been running like a champ! Last mowing I was going up a hill and heard a whirring sound, and then she just... stopped moving. I'm not sure what it is, but it's been in my backyard for a couple weeks. Starts, and runs great, but now nothing when moving the handle. Could be a Hydro pump. All that being said, I'm not going to have time to mess with it this year. Three kids under six, one on the way, and getting the house wrapped up to move in the near future, leave me out of time. I'm thinking of listing it on Craigslist, or Facebook for sale. The guy that helped me fix it the last time, mentioned he'd be interested in the motor for 300.

I just thought before I did that, I'd ask what you guys think is a good price? Thanks in advance!

From what you describe, it sounds like something in the Drive Train let go. Time to pull the Tunnel Cover and do an inspection.

I would not be so quick to sell it.. Have you checked the fluid? like Roland said. Take off the cover and look for something obvious.

Is the hydro release lever pulled up, or even the little button on the bottom of the pump that the lever contacts maybe stuck in? I've jumped on a 1641 before in a hurry and forgot that the lever was pulled up and it moved until I got to a small incline, whined, and then it stopped. I realized what I had done, and put it down and away it went.

Have the CV joints in the driveshaft been greased? If not, the center of the CV joint and splines will wear and no longer spin the pump. With the tunnel cover off, verify the driveshaft is spinning. Careful around the spinning fan.

I've checked the release lever. But I haven't double checked on the driveshaft spinning. Where it's sitting, it's been a bit difficult. I'll have to get a trailer and get it to garage, and I could have a quick look. When it was worked on earlier this year, he had problems with it moving, after working on the engine. But it's been fine all summer. I'd love to keep it going, it's the mower I grew up using, but time is a valuable commodity these days.

So is Money. Your time might well be worth it.

I got it on a trailer, and into a garage (I don't have one) late last November. Pulled the tunnel cover off. it does appear that the hydro release button? was stuck in. I've gotten it released, but still a no go. The drive shaft spins, but the fan does not when running.

The fan is on the driveshaft. Is the shaft turning inside the hub that goes to the transmission? The fan is bolted to that hub. It sounds like maybe the shaft splines are gone.

What he said. Shaft probably was never greased and it chewed to splines off the shaft. :biggrin2:
