Reverse, and lift not working on 1650
 

I have a question for the group here. i am working on a dual hydro 1650 roller i got. I put a k341 that i had laying around in it, replaced all the electrics etc. drained the trans put a new filter and oil in it. I have forward now on the transmission but no reverse. i have also noticed that the lift does not work. i presume the inner handle is the one that controls the lift in the tractor and the outside handle controls the front outlets. when i get a chance i am going to try switching the release valves on the trans to see if that brings reverse back. it looks like someone has been in this pump before as several of the hex key plugs in the pump have teflon tape on them. my question about the dual hydro lift valve is there a screen that could have been clogged, or a release valve that could be stuck that needs to be freed? does air need to be purged somehow? picture is of the offending unit as i lower the replacement engine in.

Do you have a front hyd angle blade on the unit?
And it does not angle??
There must be a blade or something coupled to the front outlets to determine if they are operative.
I assume the deck lift is working?
Pull the fuel tank and front dash cover to observe the hyd linkage.
May just be loose and slipping on the shafts.

Swap the valves rt to left in order to test them.
Either the forward or reverse may be stuck (if manual valves) or defective or dirty in some way if automatic pieces.
The auto valves are the tall units and the manual valves are the short ones with a tit in the middle. If one of those tits is stuck down, therein lies your forward/reverse issue. Caution: clean the areas around the valves THOUROLY before removing them to avoid debris from falling into the unit.

I would suggest you look at the Relief Valves. Pull them out, clean & wash them out real good, make sure that the internal components move freely, blow them out with air and then re-install. See if that helps.

the unit has the auto release valves. I have already removed them and checked to make sure the ball moves freely in each one. they were cleaned and reassembled into the unit. before i had done this (and changed fluid/filter) the forward would only work when the lever was most of the way up and was incredibly jerky. most of that was fixed with the replacing of the fluid and filter. reverse is still no operative. i do not have a front blade on the tractor. i am referring to the implement lift cylinder between the frame rails on the tractor. when i had checked last the linkages were working fine albeit a bit stiff. i shall dig into them a bit more to see if they are not stroking the entire way.

Swap the Forward and Reverse valves around and see what happens.

To determine which lift handle actuates the lift cylinder, look in the dash and see which handle actuates the spool valve that is connected to the line(s) that go to the lift cylinder. I've never had a stock/OEM twin stick, but when I converted my 1450 to dual outlets, my original outer handle operates the lift and the inner handle controls the aux outlets. Should be easy to tell looking inside the dash tower.

Seems like someone else had this same problem a few years ago. They went to change the fluid out of the rear end a 2nd time, even after having changed it out with new fluid and found a cleaning rag that they had left in there clogging things up. Are you sure that you removed everything? Did it work before you did your cleaning/updating?

So i swapped the valves in the trans and now i have reverse but not forward. So i presume the other valve is not working. As for the hydraulic lift the inner handle actuates the implement lift. It looks to be stroking just fine but no movement on the lift. I dont know if anything on this machine worked when i got it. It was just a roller when i bought it and have been piecing it together. I am a stupid rookie mistake and while swapping oil pans forgot to put oil back in and ran it for a few minutes. Engines isnt noticably knocking but if u stick ur ear up close to the block you can hear some noise. So now once i can get the lift operating i will pull the engine and rebuild it. Granted it could very well have been knocking slightly when i got it i dont want to risk putting a window in the block.

YUP, time for a replacement or a rebuild.
