Starter Generator Rebuild
My S/G has decided it doesn’t want to start the tractor anymore. The a terminal just smokes and it won’t spin up like it should without a load. I have also been having trouble with it charging.
There is not a reputable shop in my area anymore, if I were to get a rebuild kit from flea bay is it as simple as replacing all of the components inside the S/G ? Or is there a bunch of checking with tools the common man doesn’t have? Short of trying one of the knock offs from DB Electrical I don’t know what else to do. I took it apart again last night and don’t see anything obvious that is wrong. Just smells burnt. Needs brushes for sure. |
MY suggestion is, to find a local Motor Repair Shop and have that S/G professionally rebuilt. There is more to just replacing parts. It can be Benched Checked and run before it is returned to you.
IMHO, it is better to rebuild the Delco-Remy than buy some Chinese knock off. :IH Trusted Hand: |
Smoke doesn't sound good. You need to get out the multi meter and make sure there are no shorts in the armature or coils.
You shouldn't need any special tools to swap out brushes and bearings. |

but many a brush has been successfully replaced with only a little emery cloth to clean up the commutator. It all depends on if it is grooved badly. If it shows signs of arcing on the commutator in 2 places, they usually have a bad armature, as it is shorted or grounded. Arcing all the way around, usually occurs when the brushes are worn too short, or they are not free to move as they should. |
Does $178 for a new armature sound about right?
Mine is supposedly burned up according to the starter shop. How common of a failure is that in these things? |
I would put an ad in the wanted section looking for a good used complete s/g. :bigthink:

The story changed when I went to pick it up. Armature is no longer available and the price he quoted was for a new remanufactoured S/G. From an auto parts store.
I’ve been eyeing another tractor that’s been sitting under a tree for a couple of years, might be time to check it out. |
I stumbled upon this video while looking into potential charging issues. Is this a viable option and vendor? iSaveTractor - Brush and Bearing rebuild kit

I know have a very good repair shop nearby. Excellent as a matter of fact. I had a Delco-Remy starter generator on a panzer that was totally junk on the inside. I had the all the guts of it replaced for $198. Just had one there recently on a Wards tractor that was $148 because i couldn't get it to charge at all. Definitely better to rebuild the originals if you can.
