1862 hydro leak

Never done this before before but here goes.

I have a 1862 model cub that was gifted to me. It had been partially torn apart and neglected for quite a while. Had (from what I can tell) the usual problems with these models - hood plastic broken, hinges cracked, hydro control plates slopped out. I got thru all that, been using it for about a year now. Runs and functions beautifully.

I noticed that there is some hydro oil dripping. It appears to be leaking between the pump and the diff housing. I see from the parts view that there is a gasket there. Just wondering if this is a common occurrence and worth going after or is it something else that looks like it is leaking there. PS- I put it up on the hoist, cleaned it really well then ran it while watching for the leak. It sure appears that it is coming from between the pump and the diff housing. Seems to leak more when loaded (turn steering to lock) but not absolutely sure about that one. Just hoping one of you guys might have some input on this.

YES, that cork gasket (921-3004) is a common maintenance problem that dates back to the mid 1960's.

Replace that gasket and you will be good for another 20+ yrs.

I am glad you posted this question as my 1864 has also just started leaking in that area.
So what is involved in changing that gasket?

One has to remove the Sundstrand Hydraulic Pump from the rear end. Change the gasket then reverse your steps.

I had hoped it would be a bit less involved, but I do intend to tear this thing down and go through everything. I'll probably just add fluid until Fall and start that process.

The gasket part number is MTD 921-3004.
Be sure to get the new composition gasket. I noticed the ebay sellers are offering the cork gasket.
