Can a K-161 Run with no starter/generator?
New Guy to the forum, so please let me know if this should be posted somewhere else.
I acquired a Cub Cadet 70 that has been a lawn ornament for more than a dozen years! When it first came home it couldn't even roll. The internal brake was frozen/stuck, and a bent shifter fork meant it was in 1st and 3rd at same time. But after disassembly and cleaning the entire tranny etc; it now rolls in neutral! There was more water inside the tranny than Oil!!! Ok, so before I get into doing anything else I need to determine if the engine can be saved. The starter/gen is missing, but everything else appears to be there. I know I'm going to have to clean/rebuild the carb. Probably have to replace the points, and at least check the coil (etc.) but my base question is as follows: Assuming I clean the rest of the engine up and don't find anything else totally fubar'd. Is it possible to make sure it runs (etc.) before I spend the money to find&fix a starter/gen? So hooking it up to a newly charged battery, would it be possible to 'pull start' it in some fashion. at least enough to diagnose any remaining engine issues? Side note: I had to cut the driveshaft in half to split her! those pins weren't coming out no how! (still not sure they will!) so I will have to find/make a new shaft! Im sure there will be more questions as I get time to do more work on it. But I just had to get it rolling so I could move it out of the way when not working on it!! lol |
Yup if you can roll it over it'll run but you gotta have 12v to the+ side of the coil to power up the ignition or you will never have spark

Agreed, 12 volts to coil and half decent points should get you a burp or fart if you can get something wrapped around the pulley and have some a$$ to pull it.
What your need to do is download the Operator's Manual from here.... https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/c...Owners+Man.pdf and the Chassis Service Manual from here.... https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/c...ervice+Man.pdf And the Engine Service Manual from here.... http://www.kohlerengines.com/engines...df/tp_2379.pdf And the parts manual from here.... https://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Cub...rden-Tractors/ |
