44C deck PTO / Mule drive belt

I have a problem with a new belt I bought. Not sure if it is correct. I have a 149 with a 44c deck. I needed a new belt that runs from the pto to the deck. The source I used and the schematic that the cub dealer used shows a 3/8 x 78 belt part # 59971. It seems to be to long as I had to take all of the adjustment out of the mule drive to get it at the correct tension. Is this the correct belt? Seems to me like it should be tighter with a lot of adjustment left in the mule drive since it is a new belt. Any ideas?

A 149 uses a 44A deck, not a 44C. Is the 5/8" pulley still on the 44C? If so, this is why the belt doesn't fit.

Now that helps. I didn't know that. I have two 149s and both have a 44c deck. I just looked at them both and they both have a 5/8 pulley. I never paid any attention to those pulleys. Can I get a 3/8 pulley to fit this deck?

Yep, the pulley from a 441/501/44A/50A should work.

OK, I bought a 44a pulley but in comparing them the 44a pulley is much larger than the 44c pulley. I am wondering how much that will slow down the blade speed and how it will affect the cutting. I also need some help getting the pulley off. I got the nut off but am not sure how to pull the pulley.

I understand that, I am just wondering how much it will slow down the blade speed. I have seen where others have gone to a smaller pulley to increase speed, just curious.
Also, if I can get an answer to "how to pull the pulley off" I will try it out and see the difference myself. I have some gear pullers but the grease zerk is in the way......... This is just another first for me.

OK I have a question. How do I measure the pulley to know if I have a 3/8 or 5/8 pulley? Top to bottom or depth? I am also having an issue with the belt fitting correctly on my 44A deck. The drive pulley is the smaller diameter pulley, I believe 3 1/2 inches?

The 44A is used with a 1250 that has the electric PTO.
