682 Acquisition
 

Well I got tired of waiting for Brian Miller to return my clutch assembly and other assorted parts so I started looking for something to use over at my farm. I found a 682 for a very good price, but of course it needs a little love. I hope to post pictures tomorrow.

It has the series I type Kohler which I have read is not that great. It ran OK but does smoke and didn't idle well. I have tune up parts coming and will try some seafoam in it to see if that makes a difference.

The PO or the PPO, that would be prior, prior owner, replaced the stock exhaust with a cobbled together motorcycle exhaust. It seems to work fine, but I really don't like it too much. If anyone has an original exhaust manifold for sale let me know.

I am also looking for a few other bits for the engine, points cover, air cleaner cover, and engine sheet metal shroud. I have one piece of shroud over the flywheel but it seems there is some other pieces that should cover the heads? I have never seen one of these motors before so I am guessing. I imagine it would run better with the sheet metal in place. I will also post on the wanted items heading.

The guy I bought from had a 782D. It was a really cool machine. He said had lots of power and ran forever on very little fuel.

I will have pictures and more questions as I get into this a little more. The good thing is that it is running, or at least was before I pulled it apart.

After I got started buying CCCs a collector gave me some great advise, he told me to be patient and wait for the right tractor at the right price. I've burned myself a few times and now I've learned.

I wouldn't chase a dieing horse. By the time you piece this and patch that you could have bought a 'good' runner. You didn't mention what you paid for it but I won't give more than $200 for good metal (non runner) and I will ONLY buy with a complete motor running or not. The engine parts you're looking for are the hardest to find plus when I do buy I buy for all these little parts you are looking for. I have a very nice SeriesII COMPLETE sitting here waiting for a 782 and I'm patient. When I find the dead 782 I'll keep it's dead motor parts for future use.

Hey Scott, thanks for the reply. I am sort of questioning the purchase now. But I think the tractor is going to work out pretty well for me. I think it will run fine without the sheet metal, but I do need a point cover which I think is pretty available. I don't know why, but the PO cut the cover in half. I guess you never know why folks do what they do. This tractor is running and had the hydro recently rebuilt and it came with a snowblade. So I don't think I paid too much. But it was a good lesson learned for me. Sounds like one you have learned the hard way as well.

I am sort of hoping that there are enough of these series I motors around that have blown up that I can get a few spare parts.

There is a nice 782 I was looking to buy, but when I was going to go look at it the guy said it was sold. I got home with this 682 and the 782 guy called me and said his deal fell through. Darn the bad luck. I don't have the cash to go buy the 782 right now so I am going to work with what I have.

By the way I think you have some really great tractors and do great work to keep them in top shape. I wish I could come work with you on your machines some time!!

Is a 682 a wide frame and a 100 a narrow frame?

Is the sleeve hitch different for both? How about a 3 point?

I am assuming the 3 point would be different but the sleeve hitch could be interchangeable. Thanks!

Not too long ago I drove 7 hours round trip to pick up a 782 that a guy told me he had and wanted $400. It was missing side panels and the engine was replaced with a B&S, I just walked away, ain't worth the effort and money. In fact I've driven that far several times and came home empty just because I won't throw good money after bad.

Hitch depends on your rear end, what do you have?

Bob, parts including the sheet metal are easily available used for those engines. Your 682 could have the cast rearend or the aluminum rearend which will determine what hitch you'll need.

Hey Scott, I didn't even know they made them with an aluminum rear end. Is the whole housing aluminum?? That would be a bummer. I am assuming it would not be as good as a steel rear end. I will check it out and get back to you.

After a partial tune up it ran great yesterday. Until I noticed it smoking really badly. I pulled it in the garage and oil was pouring out onto the exhaust manifold. It looks like someone tried to repair the valve cover by torquing the heck out of it and putting some gasket sealer over the nut and stud. I removed it and found the valve cover was very distorted and the complete lack of any sort of gasket. So I knocked it back into shape and reassembled using high temp gasket sealer. I am letting it sit 24 hours and will try it again this evening. It was really dumping oil but given how badly the valve cover was twisted it isn't surprising. I am hoping this will cure the oil leak as it is unusable as it was. I have more wiring to repair when I install new points and condenser. I am surprised it is able to spark with oil pouring on the points like that. I am sure it can run better. The plugs were two different brands as are the wires. It is amazing how badly some folks maintain their equipment.

I couldn't believe how fast and strong this tractor on the short tour around my yard. I am looking forward to trying it out on the farm!

I am also going to need a lift rod for the front plow. I have the plow and the attachment on the tractor lever in which the rod should fit. I am just missing the rod that connects the two.

I started it up this evening and it was leaking again. Turns out the tapped hole for the point cover is a through hole to the crankcase. I am not sure if that is right or what, but that is where the oil was pouring out. The good news is that the valve cover does not leak at all. I threaded a bolt into the point cover bolt hole and that stopped the leak completely. Now it is running OK, with no leaks. Now I just need to find some parts, like a point cover and I should be OK! I got pictures to post later.
