Ignition switch question on a 149

Working on the wiring on my 149, put in a new wire harness, and now putting 3 prong ignition switch because the one that was in there was a 7 prong from who knows what. I'm on my second switch, the first had continuity from the bat terminal to the other 2 terminals when the key was switched to the first position (that fried the solenoid), so in a pinch, I ran to NAPA and picked up a second switch this one has NO continuity to either of the other terminals when the key is turned to the first (on) position and continuity to one terminal when turned to the "momentary" ignition position.

I'm thinking I'm going nuts, so just need a gut check...

1 key is off there should be no continuity to either terminal
2 key in first (on) position i should have continuity to one terminal
3 key in second (ignition) position I should have continuity to both terminals

Sounds right, but pos 2 would be "on/ignition", and pos 3 would be "start".

Some ignitions don't need voltage to run, rather they only need the magneto wire grounded to kill ignition. Is any terminal grounded in a certain position? If so, it's just the wrong version.

Well, I ran back to NAPA, and I'm starting to think my assumption is wrong...they had one other switch in stock and it acts the same as the one I had. So at some point I may order a different one from someplace on the web, or else I will just "hot wire" the damn thing.
