Couple questions about a 100

I bought two 100's today and they have some differences about them. one has a big battery box and other is small. was told the one with big box was an early one but it has the regular steering wheel while the one with small box has an early steering wheel like a 70 or an original. when looked up serial number the one with small box is a 65 which I assume means someone switched the steering wheel. the other one I couldn't find a serial number at all. the one with fenders is the small battery box. Question is what all would the early 100 have different? I'm going to look for serial number with better light but thinking it was ground off.

I'm not sure about the battery box but there were different battery holders before serial 74437 and up. This is looking at parts list on the link to Cub Cadet parts and service.

In regards to steering wheel, it seems that the model 70 and 100 had different steering wheel..... Maybe a possibility that one of your 100 is actually a 70 with a motor transplant?

I bought them both together wondering if the steering wheels were switched at some point. From what im gathering the other one is early because of larger battery box and could of been correct with 70 style steering wheel. wish I could find serial number to verify its date. Will search again next time in garage for serial number.

The 70/100 Serial Number location(s) is on RH side, in the casting, like here....

Maybe not necessarily a transplant, but maybe a late production run 70 that came with the 10 h.p. and sold as a 100.

Have you looked here for a s/n?

Nice pair you have there.
Early 70/100s have a different grill housing, screw terminals for the ignition switch, thinner front axle and the clutch lever does not have a notch for the steering column.

Do you have any pics of how those things are different. There is a difference in the cutout where the headlights would go.

That is the difference in the grill housing, here is the axle, it is the one on the left and is part# 384625-R1, the thicker one has 384625-R2.
