1811 onan repower
Hi gang, I love all the help and information I've gotten from this site. I thought I'd try and contribute.....especially now that I have a running Cub!
So the story starts with a friend giving me his 1811 (original owner) with a bad motor. The Magnum 18 twin wouldn't run right. Turned out there's a small chunk missing out of the crown of the left hand piston. It'll pump the crankcase empty in about 8 min of run time. I really didn't want to sink time and money into a rebuild, and I didn't want to graft a Briggs in there. A friend was cleaning his shop and gave me an Onan P218 from one of those green tractors (318 I think). Thus began the project. A few small cuts in the frame and engine mount, a short wiring harness extension, a new drive adapter cut on the waterjet and likely a new drive belt and I should be up and mowing if it ever warms up and stops raining. Now to figure out how to add the pics! |
Clearancing

Heres a shot of the starter solenoid where it needed to poke below the motor plate and frame rail, a sawzall, die grinder and flap wheel made sure there is adequate clearance.
On the right you can see the modified drainplug. This was done with a jig saw, die grinder and flap wheel. |
Drive hub

I took some measurements and drew up a drive hub on CAD for a friend's water jet table.

Nice job on the Re Power! I did the same with my 782. It came out of a 318 Deere. The only issue I had was the PTO. The crankshaft is 1 7/16 inch and the PTO pulley is around 7 inches and burned up my tensioner pulley in about 20 minutes! Couldnt find a smaller pulley and the new style pto's from Extreme didnt have one for a crankshaft that size. Ended restoring a basket case 1872 to look like a 982 for mowing and use the 782 as a yard worker! Gotta Love the Onan Torque!

What didn't work between the tensioner and pto clutch? I've got the 318 clutch and by my measurements a 91" belt (factory for the Kohler/1811 is 89")
I know this will drive my mower deck faster but it looks like everything else lines up. Just came in from modifying the exhaust to exit through the grill like stock.... kind of, pics tomorrow. |

Had to reposition the exhaust outlet to come out the front, may have gotten carried away.
