Speed Lever and Throttle Lever Walking

Hey everyone!

Glad to be here. I just bought myself a IH 782 and am loving the heck out it.

I am about 5 mows of a 4 acre lot in to its ownership and am having some issues. I downloaded the manual, but it does not list how to fix these issues.

First, the throttle lever. When I bring it out of N, if I let go of the lever it will start walking itself up to the fastest setting within a couple of seconds. So basically I have to drive with one hand on the wheel and one hand constantly keeping the throttle lever at the desired speed. How do I go about tightening this lever? I know there is a speed detent which helps not bring the lever above a certain speed, but I just want this thing to sit still and not move while I'm trying to mow.

Second, the throttle lever will not stay at full power (rabbit). I push it up to full power and it will immediately drop to half power. Is the throttle line too tight? I opened the hood tried adjusting the tightness on some of the nuts, but to no avail.

Can anybody give me some advice here?

Gonna restore it to its former beauty, so I'll keep ya'll updated!

Thank you!

Welcome to OCC!

The first one im assuming you mean the hydro lever. The Hydro lever was never meant to be "cruise control" but it should stay put for the most part. There is a tension nut on it to make tighter.

The throttle lever moving is also an adjustment issue. Most of these throttle levers have a tension nut right on the lever assy. They can be tough to get to sometimes but it is possible to get at.

I'm looking at the manual right now for the 782 and it says the lever that is a T shape #12 is the Throttle lever. The "Hyrdo lever" is called the "Speed control lever" #13, the "hydraulic lift lever" is the only "hydro" description I can see.

I'll try to tighten the base of both levers and get back to you.

Yes.. Im calling the speed control lever hydro lever. The throttle lever is the one that raises and lowers engine rpm's

the tension nuts are not really the "base" of the levers.. Let me pull some manual pages...

You might be my hero man, im gonna look into this when I get home from work. :beerchug:

Any idea on the throttle lever? Looking at the base of the lever, there is a hollow circular piece of metal that the lever rotates up and down on, and I am pretty sure it cannot be adjusted by this piece of metal.

The lever is controlled by the cable, which is attached to a bracket, connected to another bracket by a spring. This spring is connected into both brackets in a particular hole. There are like 5 holes the spring can connect into on each, do you think the spring might be in the wrong connection hole?

I was mistaken on the tension nut on throttle assy. It does not appear to be adjustable. Looks like there is a bent washer that makes the tension. Probably worn out. If you took it out of tractor you might be able to bend it a little to create more tension.

Heres a pic and part number.

Happy to report that I tightened the nut, which successfully provided the additional tension needed in my hydro lever.

Additionally, regarding the "bent washer" in the throttle control lever. I literally just stuck a flat head screw driver in and bent it some more, worked like a charm. It remains stable.

Thank you for your help Cooperino, you rock. :buttrock:

Very happy it all worked out for you.. Part of what I love about these older machines. Many repairs and adjustments and be done with the most basic of tools and many times no new parts. Congrats! :beerchug:

Hence why I want a classic truck! Less electronics mean less headaches!

Thanks again, have a great day.
