IH CC 782 Transmission drain and refill?????
 

I find all kinds of conflicting info on how to drain and refill the transmission / hydro in my 782. I read where you need to remove the differential cover....and that the fluid is so thick it takes hours to refill. I bought the Cub Cadet HiTran fluid from one of the sponsors here. It is like ATF fluid and not thick at all. As you can see in the pictures, I have a slight leak. I think it is the filter so I want to drain, replace filter, and refill ASAP.

#1) Are there two separate units? A transmission and a Hydro circuit?

#2) Is this a drain? And what does it drain?

#4) This says "Trans Fluid".....Is this also the Hudro fluid fill?

The Allen head is the drain as well as removing the rear cover if you choose to do that, and clean it out anything that might be in there after 40+ years.
The hex plug it to be left alone as it is a not a drain plug.
If you have a leak it is best to clean everything up good and then you can see where it is coming from.
No sense changing fluid only to have to drain it again to possibly address a leak.
Hytran or it's equivalent, has the viscosity of approx 30W oil that you use in the engine.
Edit:FWIW:
the filter can be removed with only the amount of fluid in it being lost.
One does not have to drain the fluid to replace just a filter.
Do put a catch can under it so as to not make a mess on ones floor.

You do not have a separate transmission per say you have a hydro which consists of a Hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor, no gears involved.
The hydro is connected to the differential assy with a gear set, and of course the ring/pinion with axle spider gears as a normal differential has.

The leak was the filter. Tightened it up nearly a turn!

I ordered a gasket for the differential cover. I think I'll wait till that arrives and clean it all out at once.

The fluid that is leaking out has the viscosity of ATF, not 30 weight. Possible the owner was just using ATF? Hope that didn't cause any damage.

it would not cause a problem.
If you look up sunstrand manual ( makers of that hydro) they recommend
ATF type "F" as one of their acceptable fluids.
Of course if it is in a cub, they recommend their snake oil as well as Deere recommends their snake oil, Massy, Gravley etc etc.
Hytran is good no doubt, but others will serve just as well.
Use what makes you happy. :beerchug:
Now on big Ag tractors best to stick with acceptable recommendations as wet clutches/brakes linings can be adversely affected and very costly to replace.

Don't overly concern yourself with what is currently in there. It's likely to have been in there awhile and is broken down. I prefer the method of taking off the rear cover. As someone said, you really get a chance to look things over inside and see if you have any large bits of metal in the case.

Make sure you use the proper hydro filter and not just an oil filter, there is supposed to be a check valve inside. Also make sure to take a rag and really clean out the case. Might use a dowel rod to help get to the back of the case where it gets tight.

One last tip, I used a pump spray nozzle and shot new fluid up to the back of the case while it was still open and over the drain pan. That pushed out some more dirty fluid.

Well, I screwed up! Somehow, somewhere, I thought the transmission took 1 gallon of HyTran fluid so that is what I ordered from the vendor......

I drained the transmission, changed the filter with a CC filter and used a hand pump to pump in the gallon of fluid through the dipstick hole. Which BTW, went very smoothly. No spills. Three pumps and then "burp", three more, Burp, repeat.....

But when I checked the dip stick, Nothing showed. I reread the capacity specs and it takes 1.7 gallons! Duh!

Now I need to wait until Monday AM to buy another gallon locally (40 miles away is my LOCAL CC dealer). It appears I could buy Tractor Supply fluid and their FAQ clearly states it can be mixed with HyTran.....But one day and a nice ride won't kill me.

Your choice, mixing won't hurt a thing.
Your not the first to do that and I guarantee, not going to be the last.

I went to Tractor Supply today......If they have pictures, I'll deny it! ....I'll never admit it!

(But the tractor runs real nice now...Much smoother that it did with the red ATF or whatever it was the previous owner had in it)
