149/K321 Throttle issue
 

I replaced the carb on my 149/K321 and I am having some trouble with the throttle after reinstalling.

The throttle lever is moving out of full open on its own. If I hold the the throttle lever in the full open position it seems to be running ok, but as soon as I let go of the lever it slowly creeps towards idle. At first I thought the cable was slipping thru the set screw but I assured its the governor arm pulling the cable on its own.

Im wet behind the ears and need someone to point me the right directly for adjusting this. I did see the instructions for static governor adjustment but I havent tried that yet since it was running fine with the old carb and I thought maybe it was an issue with my linkage ball joint since I had removed it. I also didnt want to throw it further out of wack before asking here.

You replaced the carb with what?? another just like it?? and why??

I replaced it with a #30 carb, the other was broke.

Whats happening is the throttle is creeping towards idle when the engine is running. My linkage is wrong or my ball joint is not correct. (I removed the ball joint fitting from the rod during removal). I say this because the it was running fine with the old carb. And if I hold the throttle lever in the open position its running fine.

I did the gov. adjustment as per the service manual but it appeared to be ok. The cable/gov still creeps towards idle.

Heres some photos of the linkage in the open position, does anything look wrong?

I tried a few different ways with the springs/sensitivity with no change. I checked the governor arm adjustment. It leaves me with a few things:

Is my cable bad or not attached tightly enough?
Does the balljoint on the end of the rod have to be properly adjusted?
fiunally, can a carb thats not properly adjusted cause the the governor/throttle cable to move?

Sounds like the throttle lever under/behind the dash needs tightened up some.
That's the first place I'd look.
Does it seem a little too loose and too easy to advance?

Is the cable sheathing attached properly? It should not move.....only the cable wire.

I was going to remove the tank to get at the lever to check but the cable is secure in the clamp and only the wire moves. It also hold the cable properly when engine is off... the creep only happens with it running. If i disconnect the wire totally and throttle by hand it seems to run properly.

How much tension/stretch should the spring have in the open position? In the full open position there is no tension on the spring.unless i pull the small gov arm back.... but doing that seems to over rev the engine.

Put it this way.... the cable is secured and i have secured the wire to the screw on the speed bracket. Emgine off, lever stays in open position. Engine running, full throttle, the wire is being pulled out and creeps into idle.

If i disconnect wire from speed bracket and manually work throttle it run fine.


Agsin im sorry to keep posting, its just driving me crazy!

let me explain it this way:
The friction that keeps internal wire from moving in it's sheath is insufficient.
the pull from the governor spring and the vibration is returning it toward the idle position.
This is very common, just increase the friction by tightening the bolt at the base of the throttle lever on the dash just a bit, you will notice after you do that the hand pressure required to move the throttle, will increase slightly.
You just need a little more tightness as no need to over do it to a point the throttle is difficult to move.:bigthink:
