Tech tip- wheel bearings and wheels

Here's a small tech tip.

I bought some used narrow wheels for the front of my 73 this spring. When I got them the hole in the wheel for the bearing was too large (worn out). I tried shimming it up with an aluminum can only to have it work its way out. I was thinking it over this past week and while looking at very wobbly front wheels (new bearings) I was having remorse at buying them. Someone else told me to take out the bearings, lay the wheel flat, and lightly tap around the edge with a small hammer the center where the bearing inserts to tighten it up again. I did that and it made a huge difference! I no longer feel like throwing the wheels away.

If you are having a similar issue this may help you. Time will tell how long they hold up for.

Great advice! Thanks for sharing. I cannot help but wonder if there should be a new part to the forum called "Tech Tips" where others could easily look up these pointers when needed. The skinny fronts are getting harder to find, at least in my area, so I am glad that you found some redeeming fix for those rims! Enjoy you smooth ride now Daniel, knowing that you weren't like Clark Griswald spending $500 on a tow and bald tires that wobble, shimmy, and shake when you drive.

Very nice! And I agree with Cadet 123, a tech tips section would be great. I have a few I could toss in.

I'm usually so exhausted from work by the time I get on here that I am in a groggy state of mind. I'm thankful for other members who are able to make up for shortcomings in a KIND WAY without belittling others or condescending overtones. You know, as well as I do, it HAS NOT ALWAYS been that way on this forum. Its good for a change.....and even better when you come to know a fellow member as a friend. :IH Trusted Hand:
