2155 smoke when PTO applied
 

Bought this the other day for 100 bucks. Cleaned it and got it running and for a ride around. Went to test other controls and noticed a bit of smoke from exhaust when PTO is engaged to spin the blades.
1999 HDS2155, CH15s with 303 hrs on meter.

Nice tractor......but what kind of smoke? :Huh: There are different kinds of smoke! There's Blue grey oil burning, black too rich burning, whitish steam smoke (you just washed your tractor??) and whatever color it's on fire smoke such as pto/deck belts burning OR dust rust residue or even mice sh!t and piss burning from the hot muffler. The list goes on and on......

For that money I wouldn't worry much about a little smoke. See how it does the next time you use it after it dries. I wouldn't use too much water under the hood either. Use compressed air or even a leaf blower.

Thanks for reply. It is bluegray and smells oily not like rich fuel. but only when engaging pto for blades. with no pto all is good. no smoke. Its not heavy either, light plume.

Friction causes smoke, especially where there is oil.
PTO's work on a friction basis but optimally it is only momentarily and smoke is non-existant.
I would examine the PTO for oil residue and go from there.
Quite possibly a leaking oil seal behind the PTO.
