Voltage Regulator Match and Polarization Question
 

Hi all,

well its a good thing I didnt just jump ahead with hooking this up.

I have a new starter gen and a new regulator, however after reading apparantly there are two types of generators and (I think) requiring two different regulators.

For anyone reading this who is new, one mistake and the generator OR regulator can be fried instantly!

So I bought a GDR0003 (aka 1101691 and 1101996) for a 69-72 CC, and I have a "two-unit" voltage regulator. According to this document, http://ruiter.ca/mc/info/PDFs/1R-116.pdf my regulator works with a "third brush" style starter generator.

(the three-unit regulator works with a "shunt-type" starter generator.)

I just dont know is the GDR0003 that I purchased goes with this two-unit regulator.

It would be hard to remove the SG at this point to look inside.

Does anyone know which type I have based on the part number?

Also any tips on "polarizing" the VR and generator would be appreciated as well, because I read thats easy to screw up as well for a novice!

cub cadet does not use a 3rd brush generator like the old Harleys or
some early IH 6V generators.
You need not polarize a system if it is a starter/generator, as that happens each time it is started.
Do make sure the correct regulator wires are connected to the regulator by the labeling on the regulator Not the location on the regulator. lack of this lets the Magic smoke out of the regulator!:bigeyes:

Thanks George, so sounds like my 2-unit regulator (shown in the picture) is wrong for any cub cadet, and I'm out the $25 bucks I paid for it? I just went back to the ad and it says for cub cadet. But the delco remy document above states that that two-section regulator is only for a "third brush" starter generator, but they sell it for cub cadets (see pic)

If they say it is for your model tractor,
then it should work.

You do ground the field externally, that is how the charge is regulated, by varying the field windings.
If you ground the field directly, manually, it will charge full output.
So it sounds correct.
If you can't return it, might as well as try it.
Just hook it up right, paying attention to the markings on the regulator.

if it says BATT, it goes to the bat wire.
If it says Field, it goes to the field, ---that is the small terminal on the Starter/generator.
The other one is Gen sometimes labeled Arm, it would be the larger terminal on the Start/Gen.
The regulator needs a good clean ground.
