2072 - Carb Replacement Options
Hello - I’m seeking input regarding the possible aftermarket carburetor/s normally available. The 2072 is a 1987 and it is equipped with a Kohler M20S / 49512. PLEASE NOTE! - I’ve attempted to search the forum/s in an effort to answer my question with no luck prior to posting here. Thank You! - Mike

First, welcome to OCC............. :Welcome2:
At that time, Kohler used two different brand of Carburetors. The traditional Kohler/Carter type and the Walbro type. The Kohler Carb was adjustable while the Walbro could have been a "fixed jet". Some Walbro carbs were adjustable also. You want to stay away from the fixed jet carbs. |
UPDATE - I purchased the 1PZ branded carburetor kit on eBay for approximately $25 shipped. For reference the MPN is 1PZ64OH64P. As shipped, the choke cable tang is in a “down” type position. We carefully removed the choke cable tang from the choke plate shaft, rotated it to the “up” type position and re-peened the choke plate shaft, thereby securing the choke cable tang. We initially attempted the previously suggested swapping of the stock carburetor shaft and enlarging holes and “stuff”...in short, our mileage varied and we opted for the aforementioned resolution. I’ve since learned the entity known as “isavetractors” sells a similar carburetor with the appropriate shaft included. That carb with the gaskets retails for more. Again thank you all for your help. Now we are going to try the retro fitting of a Cyclops rear frame cover with our own adaptation for a receiver type hitch.

I've been running these carbs https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 on an 1811/M18 and 2072/M20 for over a year without any problems. The only drawback is you have to use the old choke shaft and widen the mounting holes on the new choke plate in order to get the throw in the right direction. The mod can be done in less than 5 minutes.

You're welcome. If you go this route and aren't familiar with taking apart carbs - be advised there is a hidden spring and ball bearing that fits in a groove on the end of the choke plate shaft. Take the 2 plate mounting screws off, then press gently on the end of the shaft to push the ball bearing out of the groove and remove the shaft. Best done over a box to keep from losing parts.

52-853-28 CARBURETOR -> USE 52-853-28-S (Walbro Adj Jet) The Kohler Carb would be ---> 52-053-18 (Kohler Adj Jet) |
