1541 Mower PTO Wont Engage
 

I hit a small tree root this morning but it was big enough to stop the mower. It wasn't an abrupt stop, but stopped it nonetheless. I let it cool down and it started right up, but when I try to engage the mower, I get nothing. Blades turn freely.

Ideas on where to start troubleshooting?

Belts good, when I engage or press the momentary PTO Switch to up position, nothing happens. The light on the dash comes on as usual but no engagement, sounds or anything at all.

Is the wire connector from the PTO to the Harness Connector intact ??

I appreciate the thought but now I don't think its electrical.

I tried to start once again and it kicked over once, there was an abrupt thump and then died. I am going to check further and will get back with my findings.

Sounds like a seized PTO bearing. Remove it and see if the engine will start.

Look under deck, again. You did say you hit a tree root. Yes, you did say blades turn freely....but which way did you turn it?

I suggest the logical thing to do would be to remove the PTO drive belt and test run the engine?
You can also check the PTO operation while doing that.
Now you can check the deck spindles and blades for binding, broken, bent with no drag on it.
