2146 Blowing Fuses
 

I have a model 2146 that has a fuse getting hot, it will start up and run fine, turn the blades on, and then after about 30 seconds the 25 amp fuse gets hot and won’t shut off with the key, I have checked the ignition switch it’s fine, put a new fuse in. Wired a new fuse holder, but the same fuse continues to get hot after I pull the fuse the mower will keep running and wire doesn’t seem to be too hot- any ideas??? I’m stuck on this for about a week

You could have started a new thread for your specific problem...... I think you have more than one fuse! Which one are you talking about?

There are two fuses on the 2146. One on the "positive" (battery) side of the system, and one on the "ground" side of the system.

CC Parts Lookup is down this morning to find the location and values. :angry:

It’s the 25 amp fuse right under the dash, for the starter and ignition I believe, the pto is good, it only gets hot from fuse area- the wire to the battery doesn’t get hot. Nor does it get hot to starter, I took the ignition switch off and when I tested it it read fine. I can start mower no problem, turn blades on. But then I’m not able to shut it off with switch, the other fuse is fine . It’s just the fuse with both red wires going into gets hot. And the heat doesn’t go far from that. I didn’t know how to start a new thread or I would have.

Your story is confusing (to me anyway) so some questions for you.....
1. Does the fuse always get hot, or just when your pull the PTO switch?
2. There are 2 fuses, one with red and black wires (battery to key switch) and the other fuse has two green wires (ground return to battery). Which one is getting hot?

My guess is that it is the green wired one, and the reason is that the battery cable going to chassis ground (circled in red) is not making a good connection, therefore every item on the tractor that uses chassis ground for it's return to battery negative has to go through those itty bitty green wires to get to the battery instead of the heavy negative battery cable. Also the battery terminal itself could be corroded.

It only gets hot after starting it, regardless if pto is on or not.... it’s starts up just fine but then right after that fuse starts to heat up, it melted fuse holder and then the key won’t shut it off anymore, it’s the fuse that runs to the battery, it is the fuse above the positive side of battery terminal.

Lets start with making sure that BOTH Battery Cables, on each end, are clean bright, and tight to their connections.

Check the wiring going to the head lights.

Ok, I have replaced ignition switch, fuse/ fuse holder, ran the wires looking for cracks. Made sure battery is good. Cleaned everything, still same issue. As soon as I turn it on the wire that runs from switch to fuse to solenoid- only gets hot under the dash area. Any insight wether it could be starter, solenoid or voltage regulator? I’m running out of ideas.
