Cub 100 Muffler
Hey all,
I've got a great Cub 100 that I've been mowing with, but man is it loud. It came with a brand new one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Maxpower-3341...310W2S7H3DFEVY It looks like a muffler, but it sure doesn't muffle. Has anybody switch from this one to an oem or other Kohler branded muffler? I'm used to the 1x6 series, which seem to be a good bit quieter. I'd prefer not to run a stack, but I have to do something. |

My 100 has the later style muffler. I made an extension for the muffler that angles forward to direct the exhaust and some of the sound away from the operator. My 129 also has an extension.

MattC, the "button" style mufflers are always going to be louder than the elongated OEM mufflers because there is less distance for it to muffle. I've seen guys run pipes down the sides and out the back of their cubs (got to be careful about clearances for attachments/implements. Their cubs are very quiet, comparatively to the button style mufflers. Extensions, as Adam already mentioned, is a way to help quiet it down a little, but not much. Be careful putting a stack on. This issue has come up in the past and some members said that the longer stack can lead to a crack in the block around the exhaust, if it is not braced properly. Like operating any piece of loud piece of machinery, the best thing you can do to help quiet the noise is to invest in some safety ear muffs.

Thanks for the feedback. I wear ear protection when mowing, but for just carting around the property at lower RPM I'd rather not.
I like the idea of a rear exit exhaust. I've been eyeing this muffler: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004RCT0IK...v_vv_lig_dp_it As it seems like it's around the correct size and reviews say it's quiet. Guess I'm going to have to brainstorm this a bit. |
One of the quietest mufflers on a Kohler is the ones on a 210 John Deere Gt.
I had a 210 for about 10 years and it was as quiet of a kohler single you would want. Also they were heavy/thick and long lasting. if You are going to modify one to fit, might look that way. I guarantee you will not be not be disappointed with the quietness of it. Some nice ones show up on ebay for less than you will pay for the one you linked. (used of course) :bigthink: |
Can't disagree with you George. A couple of buddies have that series and they are very quiet. I'll see if I can find one of those.

So, I ended up ordering a second stein mushroom muffler based on reviews saying it was "quiet" - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
It looked identical to my Maxpower muffler, but I figured it was worth a try for $12. Result? Identical sound, within 1 dBa of the Maxpower. hahahaha Pick for reference: https://i.imgur.com/yQ00ckj.jpeg Oh well. I did notice a lot of the noise I was dealing with was rattling metal. I secured the hood, and it is now tolerable carting stuff around the property. So, I'm going to leave well enough alone for now. |
