Cub Cadet Gt 3100 23 hp Kohler
This forum is great! A member helped me before and I need help again. My tractor will turn over but will not start. I replaced the fuel pump and still wont start. Fuel line to carb no issue. Cleaned up carb. Definitely getting fuel.
I took out both spark plugs but not getting any spark. I replaced the PTO switch but will not start. I checked the safety switch under the seat appears to be fine, but have not replaced it. I was told that it shouldn't be the coils, but I have not checked. Need help ASAP! Thanks in Advance. Mike |
Your engine has a Capacitive Discharge Ignition System. No points or condenser or 12volt power required to the coils. There is a kill wire to each coil that is grounded by the key switch to kill the spark and shut down the engine. That ground connection comes from the yellow wire on the key switch. You can try cutting that wire to see if you then get spark and rule out a bad key switch. You can also check if you have 12 volts to the fuel solenoid on the carb with the key in the start and run positions.

Thanks for the quick response. before I cut the yellow wire on the key switch I want to check the safety switches again and examine what I am going to have to do to remove the coils if I need be replace them.
All the fuses are good. I had just finished cutting the grass and washed it off. When I went to restart it would turn over only. Thanks again will keep you posted. |
Do you wash it every time you use it? That may be part of your problem. These newer mowers have a lot of electrical connections that can corrod with too much water on them.

Alight spray down and have beeen doing it for 15 years. Also attaching the hose to the mower to flush.
I cut the yellow wire to the ignition and no spark still and just turns over. I hate to do it but will have to have a dealer pick it up and fix it. |
Hard to believe both coils could have gone bad at the same time. Are you using an inline spark tester when checking for spark or are you sure you have a good ground to the body of the plug when testing?
|
Maybe a dumb question. Is your PTO switch on?
|
The OP stated in his original post that it will turn over, but not start. Wouldn't turn over if the pto switch was on.

I've seen several where only running on one cylinder and brought to me for other reasons. Still mowing. A lot of people have no idea how things should work so they don't know when they're not working properly. It amazes me how bad people will let things get. |
