Help needed getting 128 lift handle hub off shaft

Tackling yet another issue in the 128 I inherited. Since I got it, the lift release button (#9) that sticks out of the lift arm has been broken off. I bought a new to me button that screws into the rod, but I’m having trouble getting it apart to install it. In looking at the parts diagram, I should be able to drive the pin out and remove the chrome handle (#4) from the hub (#10). I first started on this about 5 or 6 years ago, and I don’t recall if I removed the pin, or if it was missing, but there is no pin in it now. No amount of heat from my torch or twisting from my pipe wrench will get it loose, so I decided to try removing the hub its self from the tractor. Someone had replaced the pin with what looked like a carriage head bolt. I cut the head off and heated it up the best I could from the open space on top. No budge. I could not get the attachment pin out, so I drilled it out from both sides. (Now I have to get the pin out of the shaft, but I am hoping it will drive out with a hammer and punch after I heat the shaft from all sides. I now have the hub off, but can’t figure out how to get the rod out so that I can replace the button on top. Any ideas or tips?

A few years ago I had a broken pin and I asked around here. Quite a few ideas offered including myself coming up with my own. Pick your weapon:

No need to tear the whole tractor apart!

I ended up cutting the “L” off the end of the rod opposite the screw in button. The rod slid out easily. Tomorrow I will weld the “L” back on. After reading the suggestions above, I also thought that I might could have stuck the positive end (welding rod) into the hole and let it stick to the broken off part of the button. Not sure if would have worked or not. Kinda wish that I had thought of it first.
