I’m back with a new haul
3 Attachment(s)
I picked this up today, a 1711 with a magnum engine, a 364 blower, 44c deck, and snow blade. I’ve been a little out of the game, preoccupied with other projects… like taking up woodworking. Here are some pics. She’s rode hard and put away wet, but I have lots of parts here. The price was right. I have all the missing pieces in the back of the car.

Nice score.

Congrats from a fellow 1711 owner. Mine has a M20 swapped in and is solely used for plow duties.

Good addition to the herd. Was wondering what you been working on.
Woodworking is a good plan, it's good to be diversified in ones interests.:beerchug: Ken |
I want to put my three point hitch on this one, I have it on my 1912 but with the Haban deck on there I dont want to keep taking that off to use the hitch for my tiller and stuff. So, my plan is to use this for plowing and whatever else. I have the 44C and an extra 50C deck here already I can put on it too if I need to mow with it. The rear looks a little leaky, but I have a cast iron rear to bolt in that's ready to go.
Over the winter we decided to gut the kitchen and I couldn't bear the price of nice cabinets, nor the cost of finish grade lumber... so in my stubbornness I compromised... I'm harvesting dead ash wood for firewood and I have some nice logs that I milled down to boards and I'm going to build the cabinets. I had to buy some power tools to make that happen, but here and there I found everything I needed used. This project hasn't officially started, but I've been working on other stuff to get some confidence to tackle that job. |
I went over this thing at a high level, because I was told by the PO that it ran and just shut off like someone turned off the key. It does turn over, and sounds normal... with compression on both sides. The first thing I noticed is the hacked up wiring harness. I think something is grounding out the coil, because I'm getting intermittent spark. I posted a want ad for a wiring harness and I have one on the way from Lew. I'm going to have to pull the motor out because the mounting bolts are loose, and one of the spacers is missing. I have extras of spacers so no big deal there. I also noticed a coating of oil on top of the engine, and there's a big crack in the crankcase breather tube. I'll have to check out the breather assembly, and all that fun stuff.
I finally spent a few dollars and got myself a chain hoist to lift these motors and other heavy parts out and in with, that'll be a lot easier on the back. |
Sounds like your making progress. Your body will thank you for the chain hoist. Most people including, me figured these things out after the damage
was done. Have fun Ken |
I pulled the engine out with that new hoist, wow... I've spent more in chiropractor visits than the hoist itself, I should have bought one LONG ago.
Anyway, I pulled the engine and got to looking at the driveline and it's completely shot. The couplers spirol pin holes are all worn out, and the coupler to the hydro shaft is egged out. The input shaft itself looks and feels fine, and the driveshaft with the couplers removed isn't worn which is kind of weird. I'm thinking maybe someone tried replacing the driveshaft with a good one and used the worn couplers, I don't know. But I'll get it right. I have an email out to Jeff about the parts to get a price, or I might try to locate an 1862 driveshaft (or even parts tractor!). I did get the engine bolted down to the plate properly, it was missing two spacers and bolts, and the two it had were finger tight. I'm glad I didn't get it running before checking it out. |

I take it someone already repowered the OP's? Mine had a KT17 Series II when I got it (which didn't last long :( ). My 1811 came factory with the M18 magnum which seems to have a much better track record the even the (similar) KT17 Series II. :beerchug: |
I had some wrench time this week in between building kitchen cabinets... I was planning to swap the rear to cast iron anyway, but I found the rear had three of the four mounting bolts through the axle tubes snapped off and one of the front mounts was snapped off. There were only TWO bolts holding that rear in! I pulled the whole works and swapped over the pump with new cork to the cast iron rear I had ready to go and bolted it all back in with the newly rebuilt driveshaft. The only thing I don't like about that is this is an internal brake rear instead of disk brakes. I think I'll manage though, that's not a big deal.
I didn't take pictures but the deck hanger instead of having pins through the arms to hold the hanger to the lift, a PO had used pieces of metal fish stringer on both sides. The engine has created a mystery for me now. I bolted everything back in and installed the good 1811 wiring harness (thanks Lew!), but now I have no spark when it turns over. I'm pretty certain I had spark before. I disconnected the wiring harness from the engine to make sure something wasn't grounding the coil from there, and there's no spark at all. My theory is the PO did this swap and did not account for the mag coil vs battery ignition and burned the coil up. I'm going to have to pull out the fluke and start testing. (Where is that thing anyway? :bigthink:). And probably end up having to pull the engine again to take the cover off to get to the coil. The chain hoist makes that job so easy. Once the spark issue is resolved I think it'll run. It's definitely getting gas in the carb and we have compression on both sides. |
