Low oil after mowing tall grass
 

Oil was changed just this past spring on my 2155, new filter too. It's been running fine but due to excessive rain and having to replace another front tire, I haven't cut grass in a while. I offered to cut my neighbors grass as well, it was taller than mine.

I checked oil before starting today, and it was full. I cut my neighbors grass then got about half way through mine when the mower shut off and wouldn't start again. I let it sit a while, then checked the oil and it was very low, barely on the dipstick. I filled it back up and it was able to start and I finished my yard. I think I overfilled it tho cuz it was white smoking when I would get on a hill lol.

What would cause the oil to drop so low after cutting some tall grass. Could the extra strain cause it to burn the oil?

Is it possible the oil got diluted with fuel and was burned quickly?:bigthink:

That would indicate a leak somewhere? It seems to run fine once I put more oil in it, other than the white smoke when I'm on a hill

You probably checked it when all the oil was drained back in the crankcase (after sitting a long while) vs when it was throughout the engine, and then over filled it.

I suspect that, but why would it refuse to crank until I added more oil? The starter would spin and the engine would turn over, but never actually fire up until I added more oil?

Do these engine overheat often could that have been the problem if it wasn't low on oil?

Possibly ran hot , is the screen around the drive-shaft clean , is the pre-cleaner clean , is the air filter clean any of these make an engine run hotter than normal and can cause oil usage

I'll check and make sure it's good and cleaned up. Gonna try to siphon some of the oil out the fill tube so I'm not smoking everyone out from this overfill

I would open the Drain Plug and let a small amount out. Seems a whole lot simpler.

I drained some oil out and no more smoke (I seriously overfilled it lol). The engine compartment seems clean enough, no blocked airlfow. Air filter and precleaner are new this past spring as well. I'm guessing it must have just gotten hot, it was over 90 degree here that day, and humid. I was running it WOT for nearly an hour straight as well.

I've heard of these tractors overheating and people have to remove the side panels, is that correct?

Don't remove the sidepanels if you're going to operate it.
