782 Trans - issue going forward only

Probably already asked and solved, but as old & slow as I am I cannot find it.

My 782 <sometimes> acts up at first start up after sitting. I start it and after about 15 seconds or so, the lift will engage as it should (I assume it takes a little time to get the pressure up). Then I can reverse it out of its parking place. When I try to go forward, often nothing will happen. If I move the lever from neutral to forward several times, it will BANG into gear - it barks the tires if it's on pavement. I hate to do that, as slamming it into gear cannot be good for any machine. Once it "finds" forward it performs like a new machine, going from reverse to forward smoothly and at any desired ground speed from a creep to full forward. It usually works properly for the rest of the day, until parked again, although now and then it will do it when warm.

The vent caps were replaced, the fluid is clean, and it has a new filter. All linkages are there and not sloppy. The trunion spring looks weak, but once I get forward to engage, everything is smooth as silk, so I question that is the issue.

Never a problem with the lift or with reverse. Any thoughts? Thanks

Did you install a hydraulic filter, or an oil filter?

Did you check the Hytran level?
A- If you have a differential cover with the inverted square plug (cast iron differential housing), you fill the transaxle with Hytran until the fluid runs out of the plug hole.

B-If you have an all aluminum transaxle, there is a dipstick next to the battery, to check Hytran level.

WIX 51410 hydraulic filter;
aluminum gearbox with dipstick;
IH Hytran to "full" on dipstick

Well, you have the correct filter and fluid....

Have you done a pressure test on the hydro pump?

Try swapping the vales from side to side and see what happens.

Good idea - I'll try that
