Kohler Command

Has anyone put in a Kohler Command (CH18S, Cub Cadet Spec) into an 82 Series Tractor ??

If so, what if any, complications (besides wiring) did you have ?

In this case, I believe you have to think like an engineer.

Engineers do things with simply no reason.

Maybe these will help!

See my very recent 582 build. The 582 since it is a manual requires a proper crank adapter for the clutch driver. For the most part it was straightforward and runs well!

Be advised they usually have a 6" PTO pulley vs. the 4.5", but the original PTO will go right on a Cub Spec CH18/CH20.

Wiring (which if I recall you assisted me with), driveshaft, air cleaner cover fitment. I can't get the 'sweep' of the throttle lever to corrolate right on the throttle linkage on the motor, but that's a small detail.

I didn't initially, but I ended up buying sheetmetal and reducing the pass-through in the firewall to more match the fan opening, and then sealed it with foam. I added a Kohler oil cooler kit. I ended up making my own all new wiring harness with OEM connectors for the tractor.

My biggest concern is the PTO. The engine I am looking at, has the 6" PTO, while the KT's had the ~4".

(A) Is there a 4" PTO for the Command, or (B) will the 50C deck handle the 6" PTO ?

Although it was highly discouraged by Cub Cadet back in the day, mostly due to blade speed safety regulations, I am running the original to the Command engine 6" PTO on my 582, and the 44C is taking it like a champ, and cuts well! Now for the long term, the deck bearings might fail sooner, but time will tell.

As stated before, the 4.5" PTO from your original KT17 or Magnum will go right on the Command as long as it came from a Cub Cadet. All of the dimensions regarding crank centerline, and mounting is identical.

As for the throttle cable, I retained the original 582 throttle lever on the dash, and used the cable portion from the 2206, then mated them together. The original 582 choke cable worked well.

The plastic air cleaner cover fits good once the back portion of it is carefully cut out allowing it to be slid forward of the element.

The Command (CH18-62588) I am looking at, is a Cub Cadet Engine.

Roland, my OEM 782 PTO fit onto my Command with no issues. It's my tiller, thrower, and back up mowing tractor.
