1864 - how to adjust hydro control

My 1864 normally pops into neutral when I set the parking brake.
Lately though, it pushes it into reverse, which has made for some exciting moments! So presumably there is an adjustment for that? I don't think I posted photos of my pair of CCs. The other is a 2084 |

Since the 1864 has the same Sundstrand Hydro Unit, the procedure is the same. D/L the manual, look at page 2-57 and later, and there is the procedure for adjusting the Neutral Position. Get a Ratchet, 6" Extension, and a 9/16" socket. Follow the manual and you will get it centered. |

I finallt found time to try adjusting this. Wife wanted to mow (a rarity!) and it just wasn't safe. So I printed out the relevant pages from the linked manual above. After reading through it several times I still wasn't real clear on what the named parts looked like. It had no parts diagram, just a low-res photo.
So I went back to the 1864 service manual. better armed with search terms and looked for "hydro cam adjust". That lead me to a page that didn't address my issue, but referred to SB-188 in the appendix. That bulletin was for slow reverse, but it did tell how to adjust the hydro cam plate, and it was properly illustrated. It was also a much shorter and simpler procedure. Basically, loosen the 2 cam plate bolts (illustrated in the diagram). These are aligned with the driveline axis and point toward the rear of the tractor. They are about 3 inches apart, one above the other. Mine were covered in grime so the bottom one was invisible. Then slide that bracket until the top of the bracket is even with the upper edge of the washer on the upper bolt. Loosely tighten the bolts. Drive around (I left the tunnel cover off) and see if it returns to neutral and forward and reverse speeds are right, and setting the brake returns the lever to neutral with no creep eather way.. Adjust as neccessary. I had to tap mine down about 1/8". Done. I still have some brake adjusting to do, but that solved my immediate problem. |
