CC 1862 pto belt routing
 

I have a 1862 with a 44" deck, have been mowing with it for about 4 years now. Earlier this summer the pto belt broke and the part number on the belt still showed 954-3003A, the replacement belt I bought wasn't the correct length I found out later, 89" instead of 89 1/2". It didn't last very long about 3 mowings.

I bit the bullet and bought an expensive correct belt. But before putting it on I need to know the correct routing for the belt. I never looked at how the belt was routed before it broke, the new belt(89") shredded so I may have put it on wrong as well as it not being the right length.

So now to the real question. Does the deck have to be released from the mule drive when putting on the belt? The mower pulley is offset and the only way I can see the belt lining up is to drop the deck and go around the outside on the deck hanger on the left side(when sitting in the seat). I tried doing a forum search for pto belt routing and didn't find one. The repair manual I got with the mower doesn't show any belt routing either.

Can someone here give me some information on how the belt is routed, please!!

Hope this helps. No you do not have to pull the deck to do this. Lower
to the ground so you have room to move under there.
I would hang it around the PTO first but not on the idlers.
Thread the whole belt under the tractor.
Put it around the top pulley of the 2 in center of the deck.
Make sure the idler tension bracket is in the notch on bracket up by the idlers,
this releases the tension on the belt.
Now put it on the idlers, making sure the V part of the belt is underneath the
idlers in the bottom of
idler pulleys groove. It will have a 1/2 twist in it coming from the deck and up
the PTO. Make sure it does not have a full twist.
Release the ratchet to put tension on the belt and set the tension with the
tension rod.
I tried to find the Manual for that deck on here but couldn't locate it.
I will look again or maybe someone else will know where it is.

1862 Belt Routeing
 

Shortbus, I own an 1862 with a 44" deck. I have to drop the deck to change a belt. Looking from the front of the tractor, the belt that goes on the left idler Pulley routes between the two front deck height adjustments. The belt that goes on the right idler pulley routes to the right of the right height height adjuster on front of deck. Then the belt goes around the offset pulley on the deck. After tightening the belt, it should not rub anything. Hope I have written this so you can understand it. Have a great day.

Thank you! That's how I put the 89" belt on but it only lasted a couple of mowings. But that was a cheap, wrong belt, didn't want to risk shredding the OEM belt too. It was the only way I could see it working. For all of good engineering on a Cub, I would have thought they would have made the belt change easier.:)

If this belt shreds, over the winter I'm going to put a idler pulley on the deck or mule frame to let the belt go around the height adjuster, and use a slightly longer belt to make belt changes easier.

I bought the 1862 used because I mow a 2 acre field and the zero turn is not up to it.

Thanks for replying. The 1862 deck is different, the mower pulley is offset to the left directly under the left mule drive frame and the front deck hanger is in the way up front. See the post Mr.Bob made.

Thank you for the pictures. The area I was talking about though is just out of the frame in the second photo. Are those from a manual? Do you have a PDF of it, or the name of it? I'd like to get a copy, it looks better than the service manual I have that covers many models. Thanks again.

Well I'm confused as I have been taking the deck off and on including
replacing belts for 15 years on my 1862. Must be different kinds of
1862 decks and belts, interesting. The info I gave you came straight out
the owners manual from the factory. Hopefully someone can find a picture
of your setup. I would like to see it in case I run into in the future.

Thank you for that link. Though it's for an earlier type tractor it does tell me again what Mr. Bob said, the belt has to go out side of the left front deck hanger. And to do that when the mower is mounted on the mower you need to drop the mower down from the tractor to do it.
