i1046 steering gear box
 

Looking for a steering gear box. One of the gears inside snapped and have not been able to locate any parts. The part number for the likely broken gears inside are 617-04036 LH and 617-04037 RH and 718-04269 cam race. Came across some information that the gears might also possibly be refered to as 759-04277 and 759-04284.

same issue here. i am having someone try to weld it. will let you know if successful. also, i may try to leave the two hydro gears out of the steering box and reassemble and see if the tractor will drive ok minus the zero turn option. the hydro gears appear to "trim" the input links to the transmissions, so if there is no trimming then im hoping that the pedal position input will be ok without that other input.

This is the broke gear that i have. Seems to be the one that breaks, the left steering input gear inside the steering box. kit part # 759-04277. unable to find the gear nor the kit anywhere. i reassembled the steering box and tractor leaving those two gears out, had to bolt in place the pedal left and right transmissions linkages (cause without those two gears installed the linkage was not supported in the slots). tractor works great, just no more zero turn option, still turns like a regular lawn tractor.

Back when I worked in a machine shop, we would joke about a part like that "needing a trip to the dentist". "the dentist" was a local welder who would weld the teeth back up and grind them back down to shape by eye using a card cut from a good tooth as a pattern gauge. On low speed gears that could afford a few thousands of extra lash, it was an option. It's not something that you want to do for a part inside a transmission.

Another option is to try to identify the gear tooth profile and pitch, then find a stock gear from someone like Browning or Martin, and have a machine shop cut a section out of it and fabricate the other details. Perhaps "parts by Jeff" might be willing to take a look at something like that?
