K301 Smoking heavy out of breather.

I have a 127 with a K301, it is blowing heavy smoke (like oil smoke) out of the breather plate, there was what seemed to be oil on the side of the block but I cleaned that up and now there is only a little bit of oil on the side of the block not as bad as before. It also heavily backfires after shutting it off.

Im guessing it is rings but any other suggestions before I dig into doing rings?

I would say your guess is pretty accurate. Whenever I have seen
that it was oil getting by the rings.
Another option could be your drain back hole in the breather is plugged.
Or it is in upside down. Did this just happen all the sudden or is it new
to you 127. The more info you provide the better folks can help.

It's a new to me 127, needed a new fuel tank and then got it running ever since I got it running it's done this. I will look into the breather hole and see if that is plugged or upside down then I'm guessing onto the rings.

You are looking at an overhaul not just a ring band aid and go, if it is that bad and not just a breather problem.
But your choice.:bigthink:

Well dug into it a bit, took apart and cleaned the breather, checked to make sure that was installed correctly, and adjusted the valves while I was in there.
Took the head off and found a blown head gasket so I replaced that and cleaned up the top.

Put it all back together and it's still smoking out of the brether/valve cover and the dipstick.
Guessing it's time for a complete rebuild.

ol' George is pretty smart on stuff like this! A major engine overhaul may be the answer to eliminate this problem.
