PTO problem?

Hi Guys, I have an issue with my PTO or maybe switch. I have a Series 2000 model 2155. About 5 or 6 weeks ago I engaged the PTO and nothing happened. I tapped the PTO and it engaged and worked fine until yesterday. When I pulled the switch nothing happened .I tapped on it and it did nothing. I tapped it a lot, nothing. When I turned on the key and pulled out the PTO switch there was no clicking sound. I checked the ohms on the PTO today and it showed 3.7 which should be good. So that leaves the switch. I'm not sure how to determine if there's a problem with the switch. On the PTO there's a blue wire and a red wire. I checked the continuity of the blue wire to the switch and nothing, no beep. The red wire must go to the ignition switch I'm guessing. The PTO switch does not appear to have any melting issue. I'm stumped at this point and I hope someone here is familiar with this problem. Unfortunately I'm in Fl and the grass still needs cutting. I have my 127 but one of the spindle pulleys need replaced. Just can't get ahead.
I appreciate any help that you can give.
Thanks, Mike

They had 2 wiring diagrams for the 2155 depending on ser # here are both of them. I assume that you're sitting in the seat when you try to engage the PTO?:bigthink:

Thanks for those. Are they from the library on here? I'll check it because the links you attached are blurry when I enlarge them. I was looking earlier today for a diagram.

My Dad disconnected that wire under the seat right after he bought it. So really didn't matter I guess.

I sent the diagrams to your e-mail.

Thanks Sam, Nothing showed up yet but I ran across a thread where Ironman showed a link to www.cubcadetpartsnmore.com where there was a good diagram. I'll have to do more research on how to check the pto switch. :HeadScratch:

So I checked the PTO switch and it seems OK. Next I hooked a pair of test leads from the PTO directly to the battery and it doesn't engage even though the ohm measured on the PTO is 3.7 which should be good. :bash2:
So do you think the PTO has a short inside keeping it from engaging?

Ok I'll just jump in here for a quickie.
If you put a wire from the battery positive to one lead of the coil at the clutch,
Then put another lead from the battery negative to the other lead of the clutch that should make the coil in the clutch pull in.
That said the last lead connected, should spark a bit as it has power going through it. ---- if it does, the coil might be good.
Another check is
With both leads connected to the clutch coil wires from the battery, you should also notice a magnetic attraction of a metal small screwdriver being pulled to the coil/plate assy, with power applied, because you are in essence making an electro magnet.
That should tell you is the coil is good or bad.
it is possible for the coil to read ohm age, but when you power the coil,
the wire separates internally and the continuity is lost.

The wire in the pull in coil is one continuous wound coil of wire. much like a spool
of fishing string on a fishing reel.

I have opened up
pto clutches and found the coils swelled with the windings rubbing on the rotating plate till they wear through.
Hope
i have not lost you of confused you.:bigthink:

Thanks ol'George, I connected directly from the battery to the PTO and there was a weak click but I think it should of been stronger. But I get nothing when hooked up to the switch and the switch checks out good. I suspect it must be the PTO. I have a new clutch coming Mon or Tue. I'll just return it if that's not the problem. What makes me think it's probably the PTO is a couple of months ago it wouldn't engaged when I pulled the switch so while the switch was pulled I gave it a tap and it engaged and worked fine until a few days ago. No tappin worked at all this time so will see. I have everything taken apart ready for the new part. The tractor has always been kept inside so there was no rusted bolts to deal with. I'll let you know the outcome when I get it back together.

some of those clutches have a specified air gap between the electro magnet and plate. :bigthink: I don't remember reading that you checked it.
but if the gap is too wide, the magnet will not pull the plate in and drive the pulley.
it works exactly like an Air condition compressor in some vehicles.

No I haven't checked the air gap only because I didn't know anything about that. :HeadScratch: Well I got the new PTO and it still doesn't engage. I put the power directly to it and it sounds strong whereas the old one does not. So what does that leave me with? The switch which checks out good or whatever else I'm not aware of. So I ordered a new switch which will be here Wed. and I'll hope that is the problem.
Thanks for following along ol'George.
