44C Rebuild
 

Good morning all!
In the final steps of a winter project that I've ignored for the last 3 years, rebuilding a nice 44C deck. I received this deck as part of a tractor purchase years ago and it came with only the center spindle. Don't necessarily have a use for it right now but I'm also on this shop clean up kick of finishing projects I've started (782D I know, I know.... your time is coming) and want to get it put back together.

I harvested two outer spindles from a parts deck mainly for the spindle housings. I sourced new bearings and seals and have gone through the process of cleaning, wire brushing and reassembling the spindles. I looked in the 44C deck manual and can't seem to find the spindle nut torque specs, does anyone happen to know that off hand or can point me to the correct literature to find it? I thought for sure it would be in the deck manual.

Asking specifically for items #2 and #10.

#2 is the bottom nut that holds the blade on, no brainer here, just several burps with your impact gun and the same for the top nut that holds the pulley on.
Sorry I don't have a torque in foot pounds, maybe someone else will chime in.
Do be advised the spindle must rotate freely after tightening or you have to
shim the spacer sleeve between the inner cones. ( ok to slightly drag as the seals are new)
Also make sure one of your lip seals is facing the outside to allow excessive grease to work out when greasing the zerk fittings or you will push the seals out, usually damaging them when the spindles are rotated/ (put in use)

Most put the bottom seal with the lip out, putting the excessive grease under the deck instead of making a mess under the cover and getting on the belt. :beerchug:

I wondered about those seals…. I’ll have to go back and check now and see if I have them installed correctly.

The spindle nuts #10 are 90 110 ft/lbs
the blade nuts #2 are 50 - 60 ft/lbs

Here are how I installed the seals:

It's hard to tell but that looks to be incorrect. You need to flip that seal around so the excess grease can pass through.

Installed this way The inner seal lip that rests on the spindle shaft angles outward, if flipped the other way it does not.

Confusing,is the picture correct?

Looks correct. The lip seal against the spindle faces out to expel the grease. If turned the other way, the housing would fill with grease and expand against the the inner seal lip that surrounds the spindle, increasing pressure against it, and preventing grease from coming out.
