My Intro
6 Attachment(s)
I guess it's time I finally introduced myself. I started lurking here this summer when I decided to restore my Dad's old 102 that he bought new in '67.
I suppose you could say I grew up with Cubs, this photo shows me as an eager 1 year old with my Grandpa in May of '61 on his new original. Looks like I'm trying to figure out how to start this thing! I ended up with a lot of seat time on that O mowing his 5 acres a few years later. The second is of me on the 102 on Labor Day of 1968 at the local tractor pull. This was the first pulling contest for the old girl, but my Dad would soon get hooked. The next is of sled pulling duty with my little sister in the winter of '70. Dad started serious pulling in the early 70's and that's all the tractor was used for then. The other two photos were taken in around '76 or '77. It had gotten pretty radical by then, running nitro and alcohol, and tearing up parts left and right. Wasn't much of an aftermarket for parts then, when I tore it down this summer to restore it, I had to shake my head when I came across some of the modifications he had made so many years ago. Luckily he had saved all the original parts. The old girl had sat for most of the last twenty or thirty years, but she came out pretty nice. Dad passed away about 10 years ago, I wish he could see his baby again. Bob |

Thanks guys. About that original, I too noticed it had a pull start when I found the picture. I asked my Grandpa about that, (he's still alive in his 90's and still pretty sharp), and he told me that's what it had when he bought it. He later took it back to the dealer and had them install the electric start, which is what I remember it having. He said it was too hard for my Grandma to pull the starter.
I really would like to find out what happened to it. When he sold it in the late 70's, the local IH dealer was really hot to trot after it, they said the serial # was the lowest they knew about and it was one of the first built. My Grandpa bought it new in he thinks early '61 at a dealer here in the Chicago area. The IH dealer restored it and it sat on their showroom floor till the mid 90's when they went out of business. I don't know what became of it after that. Bob |
