1604 won't start no spark
 

I went out and started my cub 1604 (Briggs & Stratton 16hp) it ran fine, then when I went to restart it later it did not start and I pulled the spark plug off and I saw that I was not getting a spark.
I replaced my voltage regulator last year, as I was getting an intermittent starting issue last year and that took care of it. Could it be that again?
If someone could point me in a systematic system of troubleshooting this problem I would be appreciative.
Safety switches are all bypassed.

It could be the ignition coil...those tend to go bad.

The 1604 has a Motor that has a Magneto Ignition.

Here is a Wiring Diagram.

In order for the motor to start, the yellow wire(s) from either the Ignition Switch and/or Seat Relay have to be OPEN (nothing going to ground).

I would suggest either disconnecting the Yellow Wire going to the motor (or cutting it) and see if it starts up. If it does, then you have:
* A bad Ignition Switch
* A bad Seat Relay
* Some bad wiring along the Yellow Wires

Once the testing is done, you will either have to connect or repair the yellow wire back to the way it was.

Hi Guys,
There's a model 1604, 18 hp for sale, says with a 68" deck. I can't find any photos of a 1604 and it's a drive to go see it. Can you help with information on these tractors? When were they built, are they a good model tractor? Thank you, d

I don't think whoever listed the ad knows what he's talking about. A 1604 has a 16 hp Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder engine, which is alright, but has a really dumb carb and is kinda cheap compared to the Kohlers in my opinion. Parts are fairly cheap for the motor. The deck would be a 44" or 50" deck most likely...there is no 68" deck. I'm guessing it's a 50" and the owner measured the overall width of the deck.

It would have been built roughly between 1987 and 1989. The rearend is also on the cheap side compared to other gear drive Cub Cadets...the 1604 was built to compete with lower-priced tractors. It's not as tough as a 1606 or 1806 which both had better rearends. If I were you, I'd wait around for something a little better. It'll cut your grass just fine, but that's about it.

Seeing that you're in Pennsylvania, there's a ton of Cub Cadets there. There are better tractors out there.
