Marvel mystery oil does it work or snake oil??
 

Well, got the 12 hp all buttoned up in the 1200 but boy,what a smoker.It starts up so nice but I believe I hear remnants of a rod knock. I may be hearing things though as when it revs up,it quiets down. I thought I would try some Marvel Mystery Oil to maybe lubricate things up. On the bottle,it says to add 20%MMO of the total fluid level you need. I was thinking that seemed alot. How much do you use in your machine? Do you just use it in the oil or in gas as well??Does it make a difference at all? I am not expecting a brand new motor miracle out of it,just thought I'd hear opinions.

I add a couple oz. to the gas every time I top off the tank on my 1450 just for upper end lubricant. Never added it to the oil because I use Amsoil Synthetic.

I use 1 qt motor oil and top the rest with Marvel in both k241 and k301.I also add it to five gallons of premium gas as per instructions on the label.

I have used it to free up seized piston on Briggs motor that was said to need torn down and got many hours of good use from it.

I can't prove it helps slow down engine wear but it doesn't hurt them.My snow blower pull starts easier in winter when added to the oil.

BigNasty: I've been using one capful per gallon of gas for about 12 years and it works for me... Never had to use in in the oil...PS: a note of caution... Never pour MMO directly into the tractor's gas tank!! It won't mix, will settle to the bottom and goo up your carb... Mix it in your fuel container. I do it when I fill up the container at the gas station. Once mixed well in your container, it stays mixed and does not separate. Just my experience...

I have used it in both gas and oil, and I think it does work. The briggs twin in one of the 582s I have used to have no power and it would blow most of the oil out of the breather on one cylinder. Since I put MMO in the gas and oil and worked it hard for a few hours, the power improved and the oil consumption decreased.

If you have a rod knock, it's not going to fix that. Nothing will reverse damage that has already been done. And if that really is a rod knock, I'm not sure how long I'd be running that, either. It's not a matter of if it will break, but when it will break.

Some people love MMO and some people hate it. Naturally MMO or any other additive will not "cure" a knocking rod or worn out rings. However it is my opinion that when added to fuel it can help lubricate the top side of a small engine and help to free up piston rings and remove built up sludge and carbon deposits.

Something else you may want to consider is the "knock" that you describe may be cam shaft knock, caused from worn out/missing shims on the end of the cam. Cam shaft knock is most noticeable at slower engine speeds and often times will seem to "go away" at full throttle.

Whenever I acquire a cub that I do not know the history to, I run it in the crankcase to clean house for a while. Often, I have seen an engine that had stuck rings stop smoking and work almost like new. When I change out the oil, then I do not add it in my new oil as it tends to thin it out a bit.

I run it in all my vehicles in the gas and oil. I only run half the recommended amount in the oil of my cubs.

Been using that stuff for over 10 years for any of my thingies that have a gas burning engine. SWEAR BY IT. :Pray:

A GOD-SEND for my boat, NO SMOKE. That is a very important point in trolling with a boat for 3 to 5 hours on Lake Michigan. Been on boats that use regular oil/gas mix & can give one the weebie jebies after a few hours, UGH!
