128 Engine Disassembled
I have posted some threads in other areas, but figured I would just make a thread. Been getting around to getting the 128 engine taken apart this past week. I finally got the flywheel pulled today and that allowed me to get into the motor and pull the rod and piston, camshaft, governor gear and all I have left to do is pull the valves soon as I get or borrow a valve spring compressor.
The inside of the motor looks great. No unusual pieces of metal or debris floating around. The cylinder has a great crosshatch at the bottom of the bore, but is completely gone on the piston ring portion. The second compression ring was stuck, but the first ring and oil rings were all fine. The rod bearing surface looked really good to me considering it is the original rod. The crank surface felt smooth and I could not see any issues, but I will still have it mic'd. I would be surprised if it needs to be cut down, but I do know I will have the cylinder bored. Going to replace everything with new including rod of course, camshaft with a Kirk Engines cam, new valves and guides and Governor gear. Here are a few pictures taking along the way of dis-assembly today: Orientation of Governor Spring attachment: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image005.jpg Oil Pan removed http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image007.jpg Made a note of how the rod was oriented to the block and the oil hole in the rod cap: Hole faces up towards the cam cover side of the engine http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image008.jpg Rod Cap Bearing surface wear only at the edges closest to the rod and cap split: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image009.jpg Opposite side: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image010.jpg The piston definitely looks tired, middle ring is stuck: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image011.jpg Opposite side of piston: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image012.jpg Top of piston after I had cleaned off the nasty oily carbon buildup: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image013.jpg Those pesky balance gears no longer in the engine:), they did have some movement but it didn't seem excessive: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image014.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...r/Image015.jpg |
Don't forget to get a new governor cross shaft and brass nut, as that's the only way to stop the oil leak from that area. If the tab on the new cross shaft doesn't look like it's welded on very well, I would also weld it on more securely.

10-4, I did not think about those items. Putting them on the list. Thanks

Don't forget to throw away those grenade gears before you put it back together.

Yes, those were the very first things to get tossed into the trash can. :) |
